Interesting NYT article on private rentals

Some decent info on dealing with private rental sites. VRBO.com is probably the most common in our area.

Interesting NYT article on private rentals

Interesting article. But I still believe the majority of owners take a lot of pride in their vacation homes and do not mislead the public. Renters should ask for additional photos, but more importantly, check the comments of previous guests. A number of them also list their email addresses, so contact them directly if you still have doubts. Ask the owner how emergencies are handled. If they are not local, they usually have service people they can call as quickly as any rental company. Owners want you as a return guest. Many give discounts to former guests if they leave the property in good condition.

Great article. I too beleive that most owners take pride in their property and want to work with their guests to make sure thay have a good experience, but unfortnately there are some people out there that have found a way to scam people out of their money by posting bogus properties online or hooking up with a local to provide services and that local doesn%26#39;t perform and the guest is left hanging and a vacation is ruined.

There is a property across the street from me that the owners rent through VRBO. I have had guests actually come and complain to us about the property conditions and when I told the owner about it, he was shocked. He felt that the woman he had hired to care for the property was doing a great job. Not.

Again, most property owners are responsible and trustworthy but when scammers see a way to bilk people out of money they will do it.
