Fishing in Birmingham area

Hi, folks,

Is there any good place close to Mountain Brook for fishing? I am thinking about spending the weekends on fishing with my family. From google map, I found a big lake, Lake Purdy, which is 27 minutes driving distance from our place. Is it a popular place for fishing? How about East Lake? Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Lake Purdy can be good fishing, depending on the water levels. It is the primary water source for the Birmingham area, so it is heavily regulated.

Oak Mountain State Park is a popular spot, and there are two large lakes in the park. My kids fish there a lot.

East Lake- NO!!! This is a small lake, in a community park, so to speak. It is a very bad area, lots of drug transactions, garbage, etc. If it is recreational fishing you are looking for, this is NOT what you want.

I imagine there are spots along the Cahaba like near Mountain Brook High School that are good, but I am not as familiar with those.

Anywhere else will put you at an hour%26#39;s drive or more.

I%26#39;d recommend Oak Mountain State Park.

It%26#39;s got 3 big lakes that are chock full of fish. The best fishing lakes are not at the I-65 entrance but down at the Hwy 119 entrance. You can ask the guard at the gate for a map and he%26#39;ll show you how to get there. There is a lower lake and an upper lake where you drive over a little runoff causeway. Either one of them is the best spot around for bank fishing with the family.
