Island Rainbow - Great Take out Pizza

Barnicle Bill%26#39;s - Good Seafood most days

  • How is the Oleander?

Am going to Gulf Shores in June with family (husband, grown daughter and her children ages 9 and 10). Need fairly inexpensive place, not concerned that it is old if is well kept. Oleander Inn is being considered, anyone know anything about it? Reviews online are hard to assess, go to extremes that it is the best to the worst. Thanks for any help, and enjoy the day! Any other suggestions welcome.

    How is the Oleander?

Personally, I would avoid the place like the plague, but they do get business. You can get a nice condo on the beach or across the street from the beach for a similar price. In that same area there are plenty of nice place across the street and only a one minute walk to be on the beach.

    How is the Oleander?

thanks for the info, so kind of you. I%26#39;m also looking at the Gulf State Park cabins. If you know of any specific places across the street on the main drag of Gulf Shores, not beachfront but easy walking distance to the beach, that would be great to know also.

Tons of them on East Beach Blvd. Gentle Winds, Grand Beach, Alabama Sands, Sand Dollar, Grand Caribbean, etc. You might want to search the rental companies%26#39; websites like Meyer, Kaiser, Brett Robinson, Young%26#39;s....when it asks for ';Orientation'; select ';Gulf Oriented'; and it will show you condos across the street from the beach.

Gulf State Park cabins are super nice being on the lagoon and about 2 miles from the State Park beach. Bear in mind they may already be booked for June...

Spring Break w/ 15yr old boys

We are considering Gulf Shores w our 15 yr old son and a friend. We will be traveling from Kansas w/ our 5th wheel. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Rv Parks, beach info in March and things to do.....This is our first big trip in our RV so we want to make the best of it....

Spring Break w/ 15yr old boys

There is several good rv parks,

    www.alapark.com/parks/park.cfm?parkid=22

The weather during the day should be in the 60%26#39;s to 70%26#39;s

    coolish at night............

Gulf shores has alot of different things to do,

Like the zoo, tour fort morgan down in fort morgan.

Plenty of good places to eat,

In orange beach there is a fun unique shopping resort called the warf.........

It has the tallest ferris wheel in the south east.

Eat at Johnny rockets next to the ferris wheel,

or catch a movie at the rave theater,

There are fishing excursions, shops to pick up that gulf shores tee, or any thing you might need for the beach.

Enjoy a meal at Lu Lu%26#39;s , famous for being jimmy buffets sisters restaurant.......

It is easy to find something to do ,and eat.........

Thanks for the info. We was wondering about IslandTreat RV park. We will check into it more...If you can think of anything else just let us know....Thanks again.

    Hi captainswife!

The GS area has much to do besides the great beaches. The boys would definitely get a kick out of seeing the Blue Angels practice. They are visible on Tues. and Wed. mornings flying over the beach. Or, you could take the short drive to Pensacola and see the aviation museum and watch from there. On Wednesdays, they are usually available for autographs after you watch them practice. Go to www.navalaviationmuseum.org for all the times, directions, etc. Best of all, it%26#39;s FREE! If you feel the need to spend some $$, there is an IMAX and great gift shop too.

Another trip would be to see the USS Alabama in Mobile. My kids loved it. Go to ussalabama.com

Getting on the ferry to Dauphin Island is interesting if they%26#39;ve never experienced a car ferry ride. You could go to the beach over there, check out the campground (for future use), and there is a sea lab estuarium they might enjoy if they like that sort of thing. (If I remember it was more geared toward young kids, so they may be too old.) When your done checking out the island, you could drive the bridge to Mobile and come back to GS that way.

As far as an RV park recommendation, we have both camped and stayed in houses when we have visited GS. When we stayed in our camper, we were at the Gulf Breeze RV park. Not much in the way of scenery, but there was an indoor pool and outdoor pool, full hookups with cable tv, and it was clean, quiet, and inexpensive. The indoor pool was nice to have at spring break for the kids.

Have fun! We are going in April! Oh, don%26#39;t forget the Track. Great go carts on a wooden corkscrew track! Fun for all!

Thanks so much...We will definitely check those things out. Anything free is great these days. We was considering that Rv Park but was also wondering about the State Park...

    Hey captainswife,

Gulf State Park is great, and lets you get a real natural feel for the area. Hopefully it won%26#39;t be full when you want to go, as it is a popular snowbird destination. I would definitely make a reservation at any campground, so you don%26#39;t get stuck.

A good, solid website we%26#39;ve always used to check out camping spots is rvparkreviews.com. It gives you opinions from regular folk.

    Awesome...

I will start making calls today... Thanks for all the help...

    WOW.....

I started making calls yesterday regarding RV Parks... No locationa had any sites available. We ended up booking Palm Lake in Foley.. It was recommended by Gulf Breezes. Based on the internet it looks great so I hope it is....

I%26#39;m not an RV person, but I would hang on to the reservation at Palm Lake, but continue to look for other parks. PL is right on Hwy 59. There are still quite a few permanent residents there from the Ivan reconstruction days. It looks a little industrial IMO. If you look up ';Recreational Vehicle - Parks'; on www.switchboard.com you%26#39;ll see quite a few listings in Gulf Shores. Good luck!

You might also want to try FORT MORGAN ,

    fortmorganrvpark.com/

    www.baybreezerv.com/

    docs rv park

    17595 State Hwy 180 - Gulf Shores, AL 36542

    (251) 968-4511

    WE love fort morgan,

It is a pennisula right off of gulf shores,

    more remote and quiet,

you can get into gulf shores easily...

    It might be worth trying.......

    Senior Week. . .HELP!!!

I need help finding a condo in Gulf Shores, Alabama that will allow 18 and 19 year olds to rent with no problem. Their will only be four of us and if possible we would like a place with 2 bedrooms and 2 baths but not too pricey! Any suggestions would be much appriciated!! Thanks, JJ, MO, KS, BL!!

    Senior Week. . .HELP!!!

    I would try www.vrbo.com

Some owners might work with you.

Also phoenix all suites west is a hotel on the beach with gulf front suites,

You might be able to rent with them

    You can go thru www.brett-robinson.com/

The rooms have full kitchens, and a pool.......

Just look at the top of their web site for the link for the phoenix hotel

    Senior Week. . .HELP!!!

Thank you sooo much!!! We all do appreciate it!!

Brett Robinson minimum age to rent is 25 but I think Meyer (meyerre.com) still rents to your age group. My daughter rented through them when she was 19. They stayed at Grand Beach and really liked it. It was cheaper because it%26#39;s across the street from the beach. It still has an unobstructed view of the beach, though, and the units are nicely furnished. Renting through vrbo.com is usually less, also, but I%26#39;m not sure about the minimum age most owners have. Good luck!

The all suites is a hotel........

So I am not sure if the age requirement counts with the hotel,

I know the condo%26#39;s have one,

I would call and ask about the hotel......

I like the location better than the one across the street........

That%26#39;s a busy multi lane street.

There are two of the hotels. I like the west one the best......

  • Mobile Tennis Center

Our Tennis team is coming to Mobile at the end of April to compete in the USTA National Championships at Mobile Tennis Center (also called Newton Cox Tennis Cenetr).

None of us have been to Mobile and look forward to exploring Mobile.

We are looking for nice comfortable, clean accommodations near the Tennis facilty. Even a condo would work. We will be there from April 26 to 30th.

We also are trying to find what are the ';don%26#39;t miss'; sites, events, tours to do in that short time.

Any Suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank you

    Mobile Tennis Center

The tennis center is a nice facility. It doesn%26#39;t have any hotels extremely close by that I can think of, but a bunch within a 15 minute drive or so. I like the Homewood Suites off Airport Blvd. near Hillcrest Road. There is also an almost new Hampton Inn there. To get to the Tennis Center would be east on Airport a few hundred yards, north on Hillcrest for about a half mile, east on Old Shell for a few hundred yards, north on University then right onto Galliard and it takes you to the Tennis Center.

Otherwise there are a lot of hotels on the I-65 frontage roads, referred to commonly as the Beltline.

Bellingrath Gardens is a nice place to visit, but the azaleas will have already bloomed by then, so it won%26#39;t be at its peak. I imagine it would still be nice. If you%26#39;ve never been on an old battleship, the USS Alabama on Mobile Bay is a nice attraction. Mobile is a great place to live, but not a real tourist town full of great ';must see'; attractions.

    Mobile Tennis Center

One other thing, if there are any golfers in your traveling group they may want to bring the clubs. Magnolia Grove, a nearby public course, is a Robert Trent Jones course and is very nice. Two 18 hole layouts and a very interesting Par 3 course as well. The Crossings course is the home of the LPGA tournament of champions each year. The Falls course is an even better layout but since it doesn%26#39;t have a turn at the clubhouse it doesn%26#39;t lay out as well for tournaments. It%26#39;s not usually crowded, and very little of the course if any has houses on it. A very scenic and challenging track.

Thank you for the great input. USTA will be putting on a dinner on the USS Alabama one night for us. We are all excited to see it.

Carribean, Perdido Beach Resort or Island House?

I%26#39;m having a hard time finding a 1 bedroom condo available for when I%26#39;m visiting. There is one at the Carribean I%26#39;m looking at as well as Tidewater and Tradewinds. Or I%26#39;m looking at Perdido Beach Resort or the Island House. Any recommendations?

Carribean, Perdido Beach Resort or Island House?

Tidewater and Tradewinds are both nice properties in Orange Beach. Nice pool areas. Tradewinds has a swim-through indoor/outdoor pool. Tidewater has two pools, one in one out. Of those two I like Tidewater.

When you say Caribbean are you talking about Grand Caribbean. Keep in mind it is across the road from the beach, not Gulf Front. Pool area is small, but the condos are nice.

I%26#39;m not a fan of PBR, but I know a lot of people like it. Nice pool area.

Carribean, Perdido Beach Resort or Island House?

Depending on the number in your party, I would think a condo would be much more comfortable. Perdido Beach Resort rooms may not be Gulf front and they are small. All rooms at Island House have a balcony overlooking the Gulf, but it%26#39;s still a motel room.

Condos are about the same size at Tidewater and Tradewinds. Tradewinds is closer to the water, Tidewater, although beachfront, sits back quite a bit.

Not sure but ';think'; there is a Caribeean in Gulf Shores on West Beach. Small complex, smaller beachfront pool, but units are quite nice.

clookin is correct. I forgot about Caribbean I and Caribbean II on West Beach Blvd. Both nice. Low density. If you don%26#39;t need an indoor pool I would probably go with one of the Caribbeans instead of Tidewater or Tradewinds. Fewer people and the beach is wider and less crowded.

  • Best place for quiet beach on AL & FL panhandle beaches?

We just moved to AL this past year. For the last several years we%26#39;ve been going to Bald Head Island south of Wilmington, NC. Very quiet and remote beautiful beaches (although the water isn%26#39;t as nice as Gulf). Have to take a ferry to the island and no cars. Are there any places similar or at least quiet and secluded on AL Gulf Shores or FL panhandle (Destin area) beaches?

    Thanks from Deep South Newbie.

Best place for quiet beach on AL %26amp; FL panhandle beaches?

Perdido Key is very quiet and very beautiful.

Best place for quiet beach on AL %26amp; FL panhandle beaches?

We stay on Okaloosa Island...about 10 minutes outside of Destin. The crowds are much smaller and there the things that you would need. If you want, you are close enough to drive into Destin and see and do things there as well. We always rent a condo through www.emeraldcoastrentals.com.

Fort Morgan (west of Gulf Shores) is very quiet.
