We will be traveling to Chattanooga, TN from Louisiana in July. Any suggestions for a nice family hotel in the Birmingham area we can stay at while passing through?

There are tons! Just check the reviews on this site under Birmingham hotels.

Chattanooga is only another two hours past Birmingham. Do you really want to get that close and stop? You might consider Tuscaloosa instead. There are plenty of places just off the interstate there.
If you do come all the way to Birmingham, I would recommend going through Birmingham and stopping in the Trussville area. Exit 141 (Chalkville Rd.) has a few chain motels and plenty of food options, as well as shopping, movies, etc. Between Tuscaloosa and Trussville is nothing that you would want to stay at along interstate 59.
That%26#39;s a doable one day drive—around eight hours, right? If you do decide to stop, though, Birmingham is by no means a middle-point. If you get that far, you might as well go on to Chattanooga. If you have any questions about where to stay in Chattanooga or such like, feel free to post a thread over there for help.

Here%26#39;s the link for the most popular hotels in Birmingham, and then after that a link for the same in Tuscaloosa:

I recommend the Embassy Suites as most rooms are two room suites, indoor pool, jacuzzi, breakfast buffet.
