beaches

My family would like to go to a beautiful beach this year. We were considering Destin. Now I find Dauphin Island that seems closer, quieter and less expensive. However, we do not want to sacrifice the beach and water beauty. Is DI part of the beautiful Emerald Coast? Any advice?

Dauphin Island is not in the same league as Destin. It%26#39;s quiet, but the water will be a lot cloudier than Destin due to it being at the outlet of Mobile Bay and on the side the current out of the bay goes. There isn%26#39;t a lot on Dauphin Island and the beaches are just okay. I think you%26#39;ll be happier going for a smaller beach town near Destin...Seagrove maybe.

Before all the DI apologists respond, I live in Mobile, and DI has it%26#39;s own charm. But if I saved for a vacation and wanted white sand and clear emerald water, DI is not on the list.

Oh thank you! That is exactly what I needed to know.

After you check the rates at the places around Destin, you may want to reconsider Dauphin Island. Yes, we do have our cloudy water days if there has been alot of rain or storms because of run off from Mobile Bay, but we always have our white sands and blue water days as well. An informative website is www.acpinfo.com or www.Dauphinisland.cc, the official Chamber of Commerce website.

Dauphin Island is a wonderful place if you would just like to relax, have fun, enjoy the beach, the water and the sun. We are going back this year for the third year and you can actually enjoy the beach without all the rowdy partying that goes on alot on the larger beaches. You can walk from side to side of the island and to see the sunrise is awesome. Go to youtube.com and find the dauphin island videos and there is one labeled morning on dauphin island. The sands might be whiter some place else but I wouldn%26#39;t trade the peace and safety of Dauphin Island for any place else.

Thank you for all the replies! I would love to visit Dauphin Island. I am glad to know that it is not the same as Destin. To me the two sound like 2 different kinds of vacations, and I would love to experience them both. Thank you!

If you stay at dauphin island,

Take the ferry over to gulf shores,

The beaches are realy pretty and white, clean,

The water is beautiful, There are some good restaurants to eat at like Lu lu';S,,,,,,

Super fun place with good food, open windows to get those warm oceam breezes, It is owned by JImmy Buffets sister,

And you will find shops all over the place to buy that item from gulf shores you will keep to remind you of your trip..

And of course as you get off the ferry, You can explore the fort morgan itself///Alot of history there.

You might even decide to stay in gulf shores or fort morgan instead of dauphin island.

Yes, I would agree...look at Gulf Shores. Especially look at West Beach area as well as Fort Morgan.

The sand is white, the water is green, there is a good balance of quiet and family activities, and it is two hours closer than Destin. Plus Destin is INSANE with traffic. NOT a vacation, IMO.

Dauphin Island is really nice, and relaxing, and there ARE days the water is beautiful. But you can see off-shore wells from the beach, and that bothers some people. I does not bother me, but a lot of people like to know.

Have fun, Miller
