restaurants on Dauphin Island

Can anyone recommend a good restaurant on the island?

restaurants on Dauphin Island

Here are the restaurants of choice.

Island BBQ - Take out or eat out on the deck - Best Ribs around, pork, and beef sandwiches. Different sauces and rubs choices. Sausage great too.

Flamingo Faye%26#39;s - Good Breakfast, lunch and view at the Golf Course Pro shop.

Island Rainbow - Great Take out Pizza

Barnicle Bill%26#39;s - Good Seafood most days

Lighthouse Bakery - Pastries, Coffee, and deli-type lunches.

That%26#39;s about it. You can check www.acpinfo.com for their map and directory information on the Island found on the left of their home page.

  • How is the Oleander?

Am going to Gulf Shores in June with family (husband, grown daughter and her children ages 9 and 10). Need fairly inexpensive place, not concerned that it is old if is well kept. Oleander Inn is being considered, anyone know anything about it? Reviews online are hard to assess, go to extremes that it is the best to the worst. Thanks for any help, and enjoy the day! Any other suggestions welcome.

    How is the Oleander?

Personally, I would avoid the place like the plague, but they do get business. You can get a nice condo on the beach or across the street from the beach for a similar price. In that same area there are plenty of nice place across the street and only a one minute walk to be on the beach.

    How is the Oleander?

thanks for the info, so kind of you. I%26#39;m also looking at the Gulf State Park cabins. If you know of any specific places across the street on the main drag of Gulf Shores, not beachfront but easy walking distance to the beach, that would be great to know also.

Tons of them on East Beach Blvd. Gentle Winds, Grand Beach, Alabama Sands, Sand Dollar, Grand Caribbean, etc. You might want to search the rental companies%26#39; websites like Meyer, Kaiser, Brett Robinson, Young%26#39;s....when it asks for ';Orientation'; select ';Gulf Oriented'; and it will show you condos across the street from the beach.

Gulf State Park cabins are super nice being on the lagoon and about 2 miles from the State Park beach. Bear in mind they may already be booked for June...

Spring Break w/ 15yr old boys

We are considering Gulf Shores w our 15 yr old son and a friend. We will be traveling from Kansas w/ our 5th wheel. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Rv Parks, beach info in March and things to do.....This is our first big trip in our RV so we want to make the best of it....

Spring Break w/ 15yr old boys

There is several good rv parks,

    Here is the newest one.

    http://www.islandretreatrv.com/

The state park in gulf shores also has camping

    www.alapark.com/parks/park.cfm?parkid=22

The weather during the day should be in the 60%26#39;s to 70%26#39;s

    coolish at night............

Gulf shores has alot of different things to do,

Like the zoo, tour fort morgan down in fort morgan.

Plenty of good places to eat,

In orange beach there is a fun unique shopping resort called the warf.........

It has the tallest ferris wheel in the south east.

Eat at Johnny rockets next to the ferris wheel,

or catch a movie at the rave theater,

There are fishing excursions, shops to pick up that gulf shores tee, or any thing you might need for the beach.

Enjoy a meal at Lu Lu%26#39;s , famous for being jimmy buffets sisters restaurant.......

It is easy to find something to do ,and eat.........

Spring Break w/ 15yr old boys

Thanks for the info. We was wondering about IslandTreat RV park. We will check into it more...If you can think of anything else just let us know....Thanks again.

    Hi captainswife!

The GS area has much to do besides the great beaches. The boys would definitely get a kick out of seeing the Blue Angels practice. They are visible on Tues. and Wed. mornings flying over the beach. Or, you could take the short drive to Pensacola and see the aviation museum and watch from there. On Wednesdays, they are usually available for autographs after you watch them practice. Go to www.navalaviationmuseum.org for all the times, directions, etc. Best of all, it%26#39;s FREE! If you feel the need to spend some $$, there is an IMAX and great gift shop too.

Another trip would be to see the USS Alabama in Mobile. My kids loved it. Go to ussalabama.com

Getting on the ferry to Dauphin Island is interesting if they%26#39;ve never experienced a car ferry ride. You could go to the beach over there, check out the campground (for future use), and there is a sea lab estuarium they might enjoy if they like that sort of thing. (If I remember it was more geared toward young kids, so they may be too old.) When your done checking out the island, you could drive the bridge to Mobile and come back to GS that way.

As far as an RV park recommendation, we have both camped and stayed in houses when we have visited GS. When we stayed in our camper, we were at the Gulf Breeze RV park. Not much in the way of scenery, but there was an indoor pool and outdoor pool, full hookups with cable tv, and it was clean, quiet, and inexpensive. The indoor pool was nice to have at spring break for the kids.

Have fun! We are going in April! Oh, don%26#39;t forget the Track. Great go carts on a wooden corkscrew track! Fun for all!

Thanks so much...We will definitely check those things out. Anything free is great these days. We was considering that Rv Park but was also wondering about the State Park...

    Hey captainswife,

Gulf State Park is great, and lets you get a real natural feel for the area. Hopefully it won%26#39;t be full when you want to go, as it is a popular snowbird destination. I would definitely make a reservation at any campground, so you don%26#39;t get stuck.

A good, solid website we%26#39;ve always used to check out camping spots is rvparkreviews.com. It gives you opinions from regular folk.

    Awesome...

I will start making calls today... Thanks for all the help...

    WOW.....

I started making calls yesterday regarding RV Parks... No locationa had any sites available. We ended up booking Palm Lake in Foley.. It was recommended by Gulf Breezes. Based on the internet it looks great so I hope it is....

I%26#39;m not an RV person, but I would hang on to the reservation at Palm Lake, but continue to look for other parks. PL is right on Hwy 59. There are still quite a few permanent residents there from the Ivan reconstruction days. It looks a little industrial IMO. If you look up ';Recreational Vehicle - Parks'; on www.switchboard.com you%26#39;ll see quite a few listings in Gulf Shores. Good luck!

You might also want to try FORT MORGAN ,

    fortmorganrvpark.com/

    www.baybreezerv.com/

    docs rv park

    17595 State Hwy 180 - Gulf Shores, AL 36542

    (251) 968-4511

    WE love fort morgan,

It is a pennisula right off of gulf shores,

    more remote and quiet,

you can get into gulf shores easily...

    It might be worth trying.......

    Senior Week. . .HELP!!!

I need help finding a condo in Gulf Shores, Alabama that will allow 18 and 19 year olds to rent with no problem. Their will only be four of us and if possible we would like a place with 2 bedrooms and 2 baths but not too pricey! Any suggestions would be much appriciated!! Thanks, JJ, MO, KS, BL!!

    Senior Week. . .HELP!!!

    I would try www.vrbo.com

Some owners might work with you.

Also phoenix all suites west is a hotel on the beach with gulf front suites,

You might be able to rent with them

    You can go thru www.brett-robinson.com/

The rooms have full kitchens, and a pool.......

Just look at the top of their web site for the link for the phoenix hotel

    Senior Week. . .HELP!!!

Thank you sooo much!!! We all do appreciate it!!

Brett Robinson minimum age to rent is 25 but I think Meyer (meyerre.com) still rents to your age group. My daughter rented through them when she was 19. They stayed at Grand Beach and really liked it. It was cheaper because it%26#39;s across the street from the beach. It still has an unobstructed view of the beach, though, and the units are nicely furnished. Renting through vrbo.com is usually less, also, but I%26#39;m not sure about the minimum age most owners have. Good luck!

The all suites is a hotel........

So I am not sure if the age requirement counts with the hotel,

I know the condo%26#39;s have one,

I would call and ask about the hotel......

I like the location better than the one across the street........

That%26#39;s a busy multi lane street.

There are two of the hotels. I like the west one the best......

  • Mobile Tennis Center

Our Tennis team is coming to Mobile at the end of April to compete in the USTA National Championships at Mobile Tennis Center (also called Newton Cox Tennis Cenetr).

None of us have been to Mobile and look forward to exploring Mobile.

We are looking for nice comfortable, clean accommodations near the Tennis facilty. Even a condo would work. We will be there from April 26 to 30th.

We also are trying to find what are the ';don%26#39;t miss'; sites, events, tours to do in that short time.

Any Suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank you

    Mobile Tennis Center

The tennis center is a nice facility. It doesn%26#39;t have any hotels extremely close by that I can think of, but a bunch within a 15 minute drive or so. I like the Homewood Suites off Airport Blvd. near Hillcrest Road. There is also an almost new Hampton Inn there. To get to the Tennis Center would be east on Airport a few hundred yards, north on Hillcrest for about a half mile, east on Old Shell for a few hundred yards, north on University then right onto Galliard and it takes you to the Tennis Center.

Otherwise there are a lot of hotels on the I-65 frontage roads, referred to commonly as the Beltline.

Bellingrath Gardens is a nice place to visit, but the azaleas will have already bloomed by then, so it won%26#39;t be at its peak. I imagine it would still be nice. If you%26#39;ve never been on an old battleship, the USS Alabama on Mobile Bay is a nice attraction. Mobile is a great place to live, but not a real tourist town full of great ';must see'; attractions.

    Mobile Tennis Center

One other thing, if there are any golfers in your traveling group they may want to bring the clubs. Magnolia Grove, a nearby public course, is a Robert Trent Jones course and is very nice. Two 18 hole layouts and a very interesting Par 3 course as well. The Crossings course is the home of the LPGA tournament of champions each year. The Falls course is an even better layout but since it doesn%26#39;t have a turn at the clubhouse it doesn%26#39;t lay out as well for tournaments. It%26#39;s not usually crowded, and very little of the course if any has houses on it. A very scenic and challenging track.

Thank you for the great input. USTA will be putting on a dinner on the USS Alabama one night for us. We are all excited to see it.

Carribean, Perdido Beach Resort or Island House?

I%26#39;m having a hard time finding a 1 bedroom condo available for when I%26#39;m visiting. There is one at the Carribean I%26#39;m looking at as well as Tidewater and Tradewinds. Or I%26#39;m looking at Perdido Beach Resort or the Island House. Any recommendations?

Carribean, Perdido Beach Resort or Island House?

Tidewater and Tradewinds are both nice properties in Orange Beach. Nice pool areas. Tradewinds has a swim-through indoor/outdoor pool. Tidewater has two pools, one in one out. Of those two I like Tidewater.

When you say Caribbean are you talking about Grand Caribbean. Keep in mind it is across the road from the beach, not Gulf Front. Pool area is small, but the condos are nice.

I%26#39;m not a fan of PBR, but I know a lot of people like it. Nice pool area.

Carribean, Perdido Beach Resort or Island House?

Depending on the number in your party, I would think a condo would be much more comfortable. Perdido Beach Resort rooms may not be Gulf front and they are small. All rooms at Island House have a balcony overlooking the Gulf, but it%26#39;s still a motel room.

Condos are about the same size at Tidewater and Tradewinds. Tradewinds is closer to the water, Tidewater, although beachfront, sits back quite a bit.

Not sure but ';think'; there is a Caribeean in Gulf Shores on West Beach. Small complex, smaller beachfront pool, but units are quite nice.

clookin is correct. I forgot about Caribbean I and Caribbean II on West Beach Blvd. Both nice. Low density. If you don%26#39;t need an indoor pool I would probably go with one of the Caribbeans instead of Tidewater or Tradewinds. Fewer people and the beach is wider and less crowded.

  • Best place for quiet beach on AL & FL panhandle beaches?

We just moved to AL this past year. For the last several years we%26#39;ve been going to Bald Head Island south of Wilmington, NC. Very quiet and remote beautiful beaches (although the water isn%26#39;t as nice as Gulf). Have to take a ferry to the island and no cars. Are there any places similar or at least quiet and secluded on AL Gulf Shores or FL panhandle (Destin area) beaches?

    Thanks from Deep South Newbie.

Best place for quiet beach on AL %26amp; FL panhandle beaches?

Perdido Key is very quiet and very beautiful.

Best place for quiet beach on AL %26amp; FL panhandle beaches?

We stay on Okaloosa Island...about 10 minutes outside of Destin. The crowds are much smaller and there the things that you would need. If you want, you are close enough to drive into Destin and see and do things there as well. We always rent a condo through www.emeraldcoastrentals.com.

Fort Morgan (west of Gulf Shores) is very quiet.

???? for anyone that has stayed at Gulf Shores Plantations

For anyone who has stayed here what is the best building to stay in since there are so many.

We are thinking about booking soon so any info would be great.

Are there any units that are ocean front or right in front of a pool?

    Thanks for your time.

???? for anyone that has stayed at Gulf Shores Plantations

Stayed there years ago and did not care for the area. Too far from town. Ended up running into town (Gulf Shores) every other day for something. Considering as many units as there are, not many are Gulf front. Lot of children and teens running around unsupervised. Just my opinion. Some people love it.

???? for anyone that has stayed at Gulf Shores Plantations

We%26#39;ve stayed there four times, twice in the East and twice in Dunes. The buildings are all quite different from each other. Plantation Palms is the newest building, but the older buildings have nicely updated units as well. The East building prices tend to be less, and the view not as good from some units (though we still enjoyed it). The only indoor pool is closest to East. Dunes is a high-rise but if you stay on the west side of the building you have views of a very nice pool area and the beach (also a tennis court and mini-putting area). We try to get a unit as close to the beach-end of the building as possible. We haven%26#39;t stayed in Plantation West, but there is a very pretty area on the west side with two pools and very nice landscaping, plus easy access to the beach. West is only three floors so a shorter trip out to the pool and beach as well. I think Palms might be the only one with washer/dryer in the unit, too. We rented through www.vrbo.com. That way you can view the interior of the unit, as well as the views from the unit, before deciding if it%26#39;s what you%26#39;d like or not. Hard to keep it brief! Hope this helps.

    missinggs,

thanks for the info, we have a vacation plan sorta a timeshare and this place is in our plan.

Do you know if there is any tiki bars or places to eat on this property?

    Thanks again:)

No tiki bar. The beach-front restaurant was being renovated last time we were there (last spring). I don%26#39;t know if that%26#39;s open now or not. In the past I think it also was only open seasonally. There are some restaurants nearby but we usually drive into Gulf Shores and Orange Beach for dinner. (We stay at the condo for breakfast and lunch.) And even if you don%26#39;t rent through VRBO, it%26#39;s a good way to get an idea of the different areas of the Plantation because most condo owners have multiple pictures on their sites. We have always enjoyed our stays here.

    Going to the Beach!

We%26#39;re going to be on the island the first week of April. This is our first visit and there isn%26#39;t alot on line about the island. Does anyone have any good advice for some newbies? Maybe restaurants, groceries, sights......or if you have a good website to visit that would be wonderful! Thanks so much!

    Going to the Beach!

Go to www.acpinfo.com. While they do rent vacation homes, they have a truly informative website with Dauphin Island information (see the directory), and the map-Dauphin Island. there is also a video by the Chamber of Commerce as well.

    Going to the Beach!

We have been twice and are going back this year for a third time to the island. We have rented from www.boardwalk-realty.com and www.dauphinislandrentals.com and both have beautiful homes. If you get one gulfside you will be right on the water and what a view and the sound of the waves. Enjoy the island!

Thanks to both of you for replying! We are looking soooo forward to getting out the snow!!!! We have at least two feet of snow with more coming this week.

We usually go to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, but want to explore new places. My kids and I can%26#39;t wait to sit on the beach and my husband can%26#39;t wait to fish!

    Thanks again!

We are planning a trip here in May. You can go to Youtube and watch different videos of Dauphin Island. We are excited that it is only 2 1/2 hrs from New Orleans so we are planning a day trip there as we have never visited. I was in Dauphin Island years ago with a friend that lived in Mobile. It has stuck in my mind since then and I can%26#39;t wait to get back!

    Airfare Rip Off!

I have been searching for months now to get good fares out of Mobile. Pensacola if half the price. Who%26#39;s getting rich off of us? The airlines or Mobile Airport Authority? I%26#39;ve contacted each airline and MAA and have been given completely different responses. I think it is a scam and they are taking advantage of the locals and visitors. Stop the maddness!

    Airfare Rip Off!

Two words make Pensacola cheaper to fly from: Air Tran. Since they don%26#39;t fly out of Mobile there is nobody to keep the prices down. You might check Gulfport. Sometimes it%26#39;s cheaper than Mobile. I always use Pensacola.

    Airfare Rip Off!

What Mobile needs is South West. Prices would come down. They fly out of New Orleans, but who wants to drive three to four hours to get there or worse yet, leave your car parked there. Gulfport/Biloxi does have Allegiant Air flying directly to Las Vegas now.

Mobile is expensive for domestic flights, as already noted, due to the lack of a true ';low-cost'; carrier. To answer the question, the airlines are making the money... not the Mobile Airport Authority. But none of the Gulf Coast airports have an international low-cost carrier -- something that really hasn%26#39;t been done in the US anywhere. Thus, Mobile%26#39;s prices to Europe are competitive with every airport on the Gulf. Domestically, I use New Orleans... the cost difference is staggering and definitely worth the 2-hour drive. Don%26#39;t waste your time on MSY when flying to most international destinations, as Mobile will do just fine. (PS -- Don%26#39;t be married to Southwest either. While they help bring down prices, the better airlines like Continental usually beat their prices -- at least from New Orleans. And Continental was the first to fully restore service to that city, something SW hasn%26#39;t bothered to do. Sorry, a bit of a soapbox, but a commitment to the community should be worth something!)

I understand the thing with Air Tran out of Pensacola, but their fares are higher than the other airlines out of PNS. Air Tran also serves GPT and their fares are still a lot more that P%26#39;cola. Competition with having a low-cost carrier may help, but it doesn%26#39;t seem to be the total solution.

I would rather chew on a razor blade than fly Southwest, even if some of the FAs are funny.

Another reason I don%26#39;t use Mobile is that it%26#39;s such a pain to get to. Airport Blvd is awful and, frankly, I find the airport totally without warmth and just not very nice.

mobileskier, you are right about the Air tran fairs out of Pensacola. I travel from Pensacola to many places and I can%26#39;t figure why they wanted to lure Air Tran here. They have never had any low prices to anywhere I wanted to go and when I wanted to go, so I always ended up using US airways.

I agree that it isn%26#39;t the total solution, but keep the horse in front of the cart. One of the reasons other airlines%26#39; prices are cheaper than AT%26#39;s ex-PNS (and that%26#39;s not always the case) is BECAUSE AirTran is there. If there was no LCC at PNS then the legacies could (and would) charge MOB prices or higher. I think the GPT issue has more to do with volume than anything else.

  • Phoenix X Condo

Is the Phoenix X a good location to stay with kids. I made reservations and then found out it is right next door to a bar. I can still change my reservations to a different phoenix property. Has anybody got a suggestion?

    Phoenix X Condo

The Phoenix X is right next door to the Florabama. The property looks like a very nice place to stay. I have considered staying there myself but I do not have small children. We have stayed several times at Regency Isle which is a very nice propery and just a few properties down from Phoenix X. I cannot comment on if being next door to the Florabama will result in loud music or congestion in that area. Hopefully you%26#39;ll receive posts from someone who has first hand experience with staying at Phoenix X.

    Phoenix X Condo

Here is a link that tells you what order the condos are in from orange beach to gulf shores...

    www.gulfcondos.com/condos/condolist.asp

I would think that it might get kinda busy with patrons at the flora bama because it is a famous bar.....

You can hear the FloriBama bands at night from many of the Phoenix X condos. If you get a unit on the west end it might not be so bad. Personally, I would go with another property with small kids.

    dd992emo,

Since you are from the area which Phoenix location do you recommend? We want a great view. We will be vacationing in early spring. What are some fun things to do with the kids besides just the beach?

Also, when is spring break? March or April?

With the exception of Phoenix on the Bay, all their properties are gulf front, so the view is always good. You can probably find proponents of each individual Phoenix property, but they are pretty much the same. Medium to high density, nice pools, weight rooms, handball courts, saunas, etc. Personally, I like I, II and III because of their location, but your mileage may vary.

Spring Break is different in different states. They seem to stagger their dates, so it starts in mid-March and runs through the end of April. Gulf Shores is not a huge SB destination, though it is getting to be a bigger thing every year. Not many difficulties so far.

I have stayed at the Phoenix Xlll and it was very nice BUT even thought it is ocean front it sits really far off the beach. You cannot even hear the waves at night from your room and I do not like the staggerd (sp?) balconys meaning one juts out farther than others and you can see alot of what is going on on other balconys. My kids spring break is March 12-16 and that is for both my high school and college child. Lots of things to do in the area. Be sure and request a vacation planner from the Chamber of commerce. I think you can just google Gulf Shores/Orange Beach vacation guide to receive one. Have fun making your plans, to me this is the most fun.

PS Do you have to stay in a Phoenix Property?

No, we don%26#39;t have to stay in a Phoenix property just a Brett-Robinson property because we have already reserved with them.

    Thanks for all the information.

I forgot to address the ';other things to do'; part of your post. There is The Track (small amusement park), mini-golf, The Zoo (as seen on Animal Planet), The Wharf and, a favorite of kids, the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola. It%26#39;s about a 30 minute drive from GS.

We stayed at phoenix X last sept. If you stay on west side you will have no bother from the Florabama(name of bar), we were concerned to. Stay in rooms with a 02 at the end of the unit number or 03,04,or 05. I hope this helped.

  • Best Restaraunt

What are the best restaruants in Gulf Shores. I%26#39;m not looking for atmosphere, I%26#39;m looking for the best seafood.

    Best Restaraunt

You%26#39;ll get a lot of opinions...

For fried seafood there is Shrimp Basket, Mikee%26#39;s, DeSoto%26#39;s, Bahama Bob%26#39;s...most of them will grill, also.

A little more upscale is Cosmo%26#39;s, Louisiana Lagniappe, Zeke%26#39;s, Mango%26#39;s.

Original Oyster House is a favorite with a lot of folks.

My personal choice would be Cosmo%26#39;s.

    Best Restaraunt

Thank you. I forgot y%26#39;all had a Louisiana Lagniappe. I have been to the one in Destin, and love it.

My favorite is Cosmo%26#39;s in Orange Beach. They have wonderful, huge fried shrimp.

Plus, I like DeSoto%26#39;s and the Original Oyster House.

We havent been since 2004, so I am sure that there are lots of new restaurants. Our favorites, unfortunately, were victims of Hurricane Ivan and not rebuilt. Our fav that is still standing is without a doubt Original Oyster House. It has a great variety, great salad bar, my kids love it, and it overlooks a back bay area that sometimes has gators. It has a huge deck on the back where you can feed the fish, and if I remember correctly, it has a playground if you have little ones. I have had lots of diff things from fried shrimp, grilled shrimp, to red snapper. All were delicious. We have eaten there 5+ times and have always had great food and service.

    beaches

My family would like to go to a beautiful beach this year. We were considering Destin. Now I find Dauphin Island that seems closer, quieter and less expensive. However, we do not want to sacrifice the beach and water beauty. Is DI part of the beautiful Emerald Coast? Any advice?

    beaches

Dauphin Island is not in the same league as Destin. It%26#39;s quiet, but the water will be a lot cloudier than Destin due to it being at the outlet of Mobile Bay and on the side the current out of the bay goes. There isn%26#39;t a lot on Dauphin Island and the beaches are just okay. I think you%26#39;ll be happier going for a smaller beach town near Destin...Seagrove maybe.

Before all the DI apologists respond, I live in Mobile, and DI has it%26#39;s own charm. But if I saved for a vacation and wanted white sand and clear emerald water, DI is not on the list.

    beaches

Oh thank you! That is exactly what I needed to know.

After you check the rates at the places around Destin, you may want to reconsider Dauphin Island. Yes, we do have our cloudy water days if there has been alot of rain or storms because of run off from Mobile Bay, but we always have our white sands and blue water days as well. An informative website is www.acpinfo.com or www.Dauphinisland.cc, the official Chamber of Commerce website.

Dauphin Island is a wonderful place if you would just like to relax, have fun, enjoy the beach, the water and the sun. We are going back this year for the third year and you can actually enjoy the beach without all the rowdy partying that goes on alot on the larger beaches. You can walk from side to side of the island and to see the sunrise is awesome. Go to youtube.com and find the dauphin island videos and there is one labeled morning on dauphin island. The sands might be whiter some place else but I wouldn%26#39;t trade the peace and safety of Dauphin Island for any place else.

Thank you for all the replies! I would love to visit Dauphin Island. I am glad to know that it is not the same as Destin. To me the two sound like 2 different kinds of vacations, and I would love to experience them both. Thank you!

If you stay at dauphin island,

Take the ferry over to gulf shores,

The beaches are realy pretty and white, clean,

The water is beautiful, There are some good restaurants to eat at like Lu lu';S,,,,,,

Super fun place with good food, open windows to get those warm oceam breezes, It is owned by JImmy Buffets sister,

And you will find shops all over the place to buy that item from gulf shores you will keep to remind you of your trip..

And of course as you get off the ferry, You can explore the fort morgan itself///Alot of history there.

You might even decide to stay in gulf shores or fort morgan instead of dauphin island.

Yes, I would agree...look at Gulf Shores. Especially look at West Beach area as well as Fort Morgan.

The sand is white, the water is green, there is a good balance of quiet and family activities, and it is two hours closer than Destin. Plus Destin is INSANE with traffic. NOT a vacation, IMO.

Dauphin Island is really nice, and relaxing, and there ARE days the water is beautiful. But you can see off-shore wells from the beach, and that bothers some people. I does not bother me, but a lot of people like to know.

    Have fun, Miller

    Quiet area (beach)

What areas in and around Gulf Shores are less crowded? My wife and I love the beach, but really aren%26#39;t into crowds...especially places that have lots of kids. It%26#39;s not really a relaxing beach when there are people%26#39;s kids running around screaming and playing (sorry to those that have kids, but us adults that choose not to have kids don%26#39;t think any of that is cute). I want a quiet beach that I can lay on, drink a cold drink and listen to the waves. Just moved to Alabama, so where on the coast is this beach?

    Thanks, J

    Quiet area (beach)

Fort Morgan is your kind of place (and mine). The Fort Morgan peninsula streches about 17 miles west of Gulf Shores and is pretty sparsely populated. Lots of wide open beach. A few restaurants are starting to sprout up out that way, too. Check it out. Some nice beach houses and some nice 2nd and 3rd tier houses that are cheaper to rent than the gulf front houses.

    Quiet area (beach)

Are you kidding? I have kids, and love them more than anything in this world, but when I am at the beach, they can get on MY nerves. Not offended at all.

You may also find some properties you like down West Beach Blvd. We have found it a nice compromise if we are on a short trip, and want the quiet, but the convenience of being close to stores %26amp; restaurants if we choose. (Fort Morgan can eat up a lot of time driving.) Some nice, mid price properties in the West Beach area.

Our FAVORITE quiet beach, though, is Cape San Blas.

About 1 hr east of Panama City, 20 minutes west of Apalachicola, and about a hour longer to get to than Gulf Shores, but a TRUE vacation.

Try googling it, or look at Florida info, OR check out www.thecapeescape.com.

    Have fun, Miller

Thanks! We will definately try these out!

    La Quinta Inn?

Does anyone know what this hotel is like? Some people give it good reviews and some don%26#39;t. We plan on going in September of %26#39;08 for a week for our 15 year anniversary. We want a decent hotel, but not extravagant. Our main concern is wanting to spend time on the beach.

    Thanks for your help.

    La Quinta Inn?

Do you want to be ON the beach or near it?

    Price?

    Amenities?

    La Quinta Inn?

Near the beach is fine, as long as it%26#39;s not too far away. We aren%26#39;t really worried about the ammenities really. We just want a nice, clean place to stay.

Don%26#39;t know anything about the LaQuinta, but I would think you could get a condo ';on the beach'; for the same rate since prices fall dramatically after Labor Day. Check out www.vrbo.com

The La Quinta is about a mile from the beach and it is a dump. If you don%26#39;t mind being off the beach and it has to be a hotel, check out the Courtyard in Gulf Shores. Clookin was correct that you can find nice condos at the same price or even cheaper.

Their rate is $50 a night for that week. I guess you get what you pay for...haha. Thanks for your help.

Check out some of the condo rental places. You can get 1 BR condos right across the street from the beach for $55 a night in Sept.

Lighthouse Condos for newbies to GS

My family and I will be traveling to Gulf Shores in July for our first trip to the area. We booked a condo at Lighthouse Condos. Does anyone have anything that they can tell us about these? Also, we have a 9 yo, 6 yo, and 2 yo. Suggestions of restaurants and attractions would be helpful! THANKS!

Lighthouse Condos for newbies to GS

Go to the ';search'; box at the top of this thread and type in ';restaurants';. That will give you pages and pages of resto information. Then type in ';activities'; and that will give you pages and pages. Both cover more info than I could give you on one post. Enjoy!

Lighthouse Condos for newbies to GS

I did that. Thanks! I am looking for personal recommendations as well. Lighthouse Condo info. anyone??

The Lighthouse is very new, and very big, and by external appearance very nice. It is what I would call a high density condo - lots of units. I%26#39;ve never been in it, but as new and nice as it looks on the exterior, how bad could it be. It%26#39;s in the middle of Gulf Shores close to everything.

For restaurants, try Calypso Joes at Orange Beach Marina. It%26#39;s nice to get there early before you might have to wait for a table and see the charter boats come in with fish, and then eat. Maybe show up around 4:30 and eat the early bird supper (sorry, no discounts for early birds).

Waterville is a good water park that is very close. I don%26#39;t know about a 2 yo, but the other kids would probably like the Naval Aviation Musuem in Pensacola. It%26#39;s a bit of a drive, but well worth it - lots of airplanes to look at, sit in, etc...

Foley has a nice array of outlet stores in one central place, if you like shopping. It%26#39;s probably only about 15-20 minutes from the Lighthouse.

I%26#39;ll second Calypso Joe%26#39;s. It%26#39;s our favorite-- we eat there every trip. Some people rave about LuLu%26#39;s, but I found the food and crowds to be less than desirable. Live Bait has been pretty good to us. Shrimp Basket is a dive, but has good food. Definitely eat early or you%26#39;ll wait. (You%26#39;ll probably still wait early-- just not as long.)

The Track is perfect entertainment for kids those ages. There%26#39;s a little kid ride section for your 2yo. Lots of go-karts, mini-golf, etc. We%26#39;ve never done it, but you could see the Blue Angels in Pensacola. But mostly, we%26#39;re on the beach or at the pool.

Thanks for the Calypso Joe%26#39;s advice. We will definitely go there.

I%26#39;m also chiming in for Calypso Joes! It%26#39;s our favorite and we go every trip!

As for the Lighthouse, we stayed there for our 7 night vacation at the end of Sept. and it was great! Great parking, great building. The pools are really nice as well. One of the pools is a zero entry pool which means that it slowly slopes down to a deeper area rather then dropping off. The beach is great in this area. We had a great time at the Lighthouse and highly recommend it!

Also a great restaurant recommendation, espeically w/ kids, is Lamberts in Foley, near the outlets. Great, great food. So much you just might have to take half of what you ordered back to your condo the next day. They have the throwed rolls, which kids love. You can check them out online by looking up Lamberts restaurants. Have fun!

I definitely agree with the Lambert%26#39;s suggestion. Both you and the kids will have a blast there. Also, try The Original Oyster House. They have great seafood, as well as other dishes. Lots and lots of choice.

Stacey%26#39;s Rexall in Foley is an authentic ';soda fountain';. So old fashion that they lack a web site.

    Not a tourist trap...just a great find.

I have two small kids and want to stay beach front. What is the best side of land to stay on -- gulf side, bay side, or lagoon? Can you even swim in the lagoon area? Question #2 is what condo has the best kid pools that is beach front?

    Thanks

    beaches

People do swim in the lagoon, but depending on how small your small kids are it might not be what you%26#39;re looking for. If you do decide on the lagoon, check out Compass Pointe. Nice pools and only about two blocks to the Gulf. Best kid pools at a Gulf Front condo is probably either Lighthouse or Seawind, both new properties on East Beach Blvd. I think they both have a zero entry pool for kids.

    where to stay? first time!

My fiance and I are planning a getaway for 3 nights to coincide with a concert in Orange Beach. It will be just the two of us and I%26#39;m debating on a condo or hotel. I%26#39;ve seen mixed reviews on the Perdido Beach Resort which was what I was leaning towards. It%26#39;s early March so not really swimming weather, but I do want to be on the beach. I%26#39;m guessing it will still be pretty quiet so early in the season. Neither one of us has ever been to the area and I would really appreciate any advice. Thank you!!!

    where to stay? first time!

That time of year condos are still plentiful and inexpensive, so I would go that route. I assume your concert is at The Wharf, so you might consider renting a condo right there. It%26#39;s not on the beach, but the beach is a 10 minute drive. If you want to stay on the beach keep it in the western end of OB or the eastern end of GS to put yourself closer to The Wharf. Check out www.gulfshores.com.

    where to stay? first time!

We stayed at The Beach Club which is like 12 min from Gulf Shores. It%26#39;s a resort w/ lots of amenities...tennis, spa, every condo has a gulf view. Private beach and away from all the hustle and bustle of gulf shores.

You must drive really fast or have never experienced any traffic. Beach Club is a very nice place to stay, but more like 25 to 30 minutes from Gulf Shores.

mnao, many of the condos have heated pools. Especially on a day like today, when it was 72 and the pool is heated, would be quite comfortable at the pool.

Don%26#39;t hesitate to negotiate with an owner of a condo this time of the year. Real estate companies don%26#39;t negotiate, but owners will.

We stayed at Beach club in January. It was the off season. It took 12-15 min. to get to Gulf Shores. If you are looking for a resort w/ clean grounds, private beach, tennis, spa and don%26#39;t mind drivig to get to a restaurant (Beach Club also has its own restaurant and grille), then this is a fine choice. Really, we had no reason to leave The Beach Club, other than to take a drive into Gulf Shores or Orange Beach for restaurants and a bit of shopping. It was no big deal.

    beautiful building, Great location......

Close enough to walk to restaurants, and shops.

Island Towers...Thanks, Fordrama for the info. Questions about Island Towers...I looked on a few websites and it appears to be 12-15 stories; and the pool looks a little small. Were there any problems getting back and forth with elevators to rooms on the higher floors and am I missing something on the pool that the pictures aren%26#39;t showing? Thanks, again!

    It is 26 storys,

There are only three condo%26#39;s per floor,,,,,,,

I like the end condo%26#39;s the best,

    Awesome views..

There are two pools , one indoors and one out doors,

They both are zero entry . infinity pools.

The outdoor pool is larger than it appears in the pictures..

There was hardly ever anyone in the pools,

We had it to our selves several times.

As well as the indoor pool.

The indoor pool is on the fourth floor..

    Over the exercise room,

There are bathrooms outside of the building that you can use when on the beach, or at the pool.

We were super happy with it,

I got a great deal from an owner because she had gave me a price several months before...

I would stay there again in a heart beat.

Parking is easy... But the garage has narrow turns going in, so be careful.

And The elevators are kinda slow,

But I have heard that of alot of condo%26#39;s..

    family hotel

We will be traveling to Chattanooga, TN from Louisiana in July. Any suggestions for a nice family hotel in the Birmingham area we can stay at while passing through?

    family hotel

There are tons! Just check the reviews on this site under Birmingham hotels.

    family hotel

Chattanooga is only another two hours past Birmingham. Do you really want to get that close and stop? You might consider Tuscaloosa instead. There are plenty of places just off the interstate there.

If you do come all the way to Birmingham, I would recommend going through Birmingham and stopping in the Trussville area. Exit 141 (Chalkville Rd.) has a few chain motels and plenty of food options, as well as shopping, movies, etc. Between Tuscaloosa and Trussville is nothing that you would want to stay at along interstate 59.

That%26#39;s a doable one day drive—around eight hours, right? If you do decide to stop, though, Birmingham is by no means a middle-point. If you get that far, you might as well go on to Chattanooga. If you have any questions about where to stay in Chattanooga or such like, feel free to post a thread over there for help.

    condos with nicest amenities

I have searched VRBO for many hours, but havent found any condos with poolside tiki bar/restaurants and nicer amenities. We have gotten spoiled by some of the new condos in Panama City, but really want to come back to GS. Any suggestions or places I have overlooked. Things I want: balcony front master suite, must have 2 bedrooms, very nice (prefer zero entry) pool, like the ';island'; feel with piped in music poolside, nice (not plastic) lounge chairs, poolside tiki bar/restaurant. I know I am asking for a lot, but I would appreciate any advice. I am open to staying in Orange Beach as well. Must have beach front. Thanks for any advice you can give.

I am currently leaning toward Seawind, Lighthouse, and Ocean House II, but they arent really what I am looking for.

    Thanks-BB

    condos with nicest amenities

    Hey Bradleybunch~

We too love PCB and are thinking about trying GS.

I did see the The Beach Club has tiki bar/restaurants but not sure about the rest of what you would like.

We really like the tiki bar/restaurant for lunch since we like to stay at the pool/beach all day.

I think that the Beach Club is more like Fort Morgan but I might be wrong.

Good luck with what ever you pick.

    condos with nicest amenities

If the bar is a deal killer then Beach Club is your best bet. There used to be a tiki bar at Sugar Beach, but it%26#39;s an older property and doesn%26#39;t sound like what you%26#39;re looking for. The ones you named are very nice, but no bar.

We really do not want to stay in the Fort Morgan area. We like being close to town, but I will check out the Beach Club. The tiki bar isnt a deal breaker, but I really would like to have one. When I look on VRBO, I see not the greatest pool areas with plastic white chairs. We have been staying at Boardwalk Beach Resort in PCB, and it has all of the things I listed and even more, we love it, but we are ready for a change. We havent been to GS since the year before Ivan. Thanks for the advice.

Okay, I just looked at Beach Club. It looks great, but wow! with three kids and all our beach stuff, we would be exhausted before we even got to the beach! I couldnt believe how long the boardwalk is to the beach. Thanks for the help, but this one wont work for us.

Really? I think you%26#39;ll regret not staying at the Beach Club.

the beach club is only a 12 min. drive to gulf shores and has its own private beach and you are just a short drive away from all the touristy hoopla of gulf shores. I think you%26#39;ll like all the amenities.

I never found what I was looking for, but I have narrowed my choice down to two. It is between one at The Lighthouse and one at Ocean House 2. If you were choosing, which would you choose? There is less than a $50 difference for the week, so price isnt the issue. I am just trying to decide which one we would be happier with. There are five of us, so space is an issue. I couldnt find any info on the age of Ocean House, but appears to be fairly new. I dont remember it from before. The kitchen at OH appears to much smaller than LH. I love the zero entry pool at both for our toddler. Any opinions are welcome. Regarding the Beach Club, I just dont like staying that far from the beach. If I%26#39;m going to the beach, I want to be right on the beach, not a 1/2 mile hike down a boardwalk. Plus, it is just too far from Gulf Shores for me. JMO The amenities do look great, though. Thanks for the suggestions.

My gosh, we are looking for the exact same thing. Tike bar, music, real resort feel. Vacations in Miami beach and Panama city beach have spoiled me as well. I did an exhaustive search including a spread sheet with ck off list of ammenities and I must be on a balcony right on the beach where I can hear the whoosh of the ocean. It came down to Ocean House II and Lighthouse. The decision went to Lighthouse for the following reasons: INDOOR heated pool (important to me since weather may be dicey in end of March - 1st week of April), 3 baths - each bedrooms has its own full bath, larger kitchen and larger balcony (so it seems).

I don%26#39;t think Lighthouse has tiki bar but I could not go for the long distance from beach with the beach club. I guess I%26#39;ll take a cooler and my own radio to the pool in lieu of the bar and music. I%26#39;ll see.

I%26#39;m not familiar with OH, but we stayed in a 3 BR at the Lighthouse last year and loved it. The pools were really nice, especially for our 3 year old. There%26#39;s no restaurant/tiki bar onsite, but Sea N Suds is walking distance for drinks and food. The location of LH is great, and I liked the covered parking. We have a 1 BR booked at LH for May.

The 3 BR we had was beautiful! It was an end unti and the balcony extended from the living room to the guest room and all the way to the master. The condo was huge and decorated really nice. BUT, by the 3rd day, we noticed my daughter had bites all over her. We realized the condo was full of fleas! Luckily we were checking out that day, but the rental company didn%26#39;t seem to concerned about it. I%26#39;m sure it was a random thing - maybe a guest brought a dog in or the owners have a dog - but we were happy enough w/ the LH overall that we%26#39;re going back!

    Hlauburn,

I don%26#39;t know if you can divulge this or not but can you say what room number you where in? We just booked 615 at lighthouse. Bugs in a room would freak me out and ruin a good vacation.

Going to be difficult to do during the Summer months (although there are some units that do allow small dogs although which ones I%26#39;m not sure). We see more pets during the off season in late Fall or Winter. The property management companies may be able to answer your question.

condo with small dog in orange beach???

I agree with clookin...check with the property management guys and they should be able to find you a place that allows small dogs. Kaiser, Meyer, Brett Robinson...

Well, after some searching I was able to find a very nice, two bedroom, gulf front condo in Orange Beach that allows small dogs. Once I found out that Tradewinds allows small dogs in some of its%26#39; condos I just had to find one that wasn%26#39;t already booked for the time that we wanted to visit. I found a company on the Gulf Shores/Orange Beach web site. The company is Pleasure Island Properties - has anyone used them before??? They seemed very nice on the phone and got back to me ASAP with all my questions. We are in Illinois with record snow and June can%26#39;t come soon enough - I%26#39;d be happy for temps above 30 degrees right now. Thanks for all those that helped!

    House Rental

We are looking at renting a house off of fort morgan road, right on the beach. They say it is close to Kiva Dunes. I found it on VBO and it appears to be very nice. It says to ve very cautious of the riptide %26amp; undertow. Is this a problem all down the gulf or just in this area?

    thanks

    House Rental

It can be a problem anywhere along the coast. The Gulf is, for the most part, a pretty gradual slope into the water. Just pay attention to where you are and how high the surf is and you%26#39;ll be fine. We don%26#39;t really get very big surf in the Gulf.

hampton inn fultondale and pelham al

Has anyone stayed at the Hampton Inn Fultondale AL? We%26#39;ve stayed at the H.I. Colonnade and loved it, and I see good comments on the H.I. in Pelham. But I%26#39;m still curious about Fultondale. How%26#39;s the breakfast? It%26#39;s just for a night, there doesn%26#39;t have to be anything to do there. Thanks.

hampton inn fultondale and pelham al

    The Pelham location is better.

hampton inn fultondale and pelham al

The Fultondale location is much less crowded - much less traffic than Pelham. Breakfast at HI%26#39;s are the same all over in my experience.

I would also consider the direction you are traveling. If north and leaving the morning after, choose Fultondale because you will be north of Birmingham traffic. If traveling south, choose Pelham to miss Birmingham traffic. There are plenty of good restaurants near each.

    safe hotel near airport

I will arrive at the airport at 11 pm.Need a motel for wife and myself. We will be travelling toward Gadsten on 59.Any Hampton Inns or similar near but safe as I leave from the airport.?

    safe hotel near airport

NOTHING is safe near the airport- maybe try something near Trussville- it%26#39;s off I-59

    safe hotel near airport

Ditto HL. It would be going the wrong direction, but I would recommend going back toward Bham and down 280 to the Embassy Suites or another hotel in that area. Probably only 10-15 minutes from the airport. Otherwise I would travel toward Gadsden and find something outside of Birmingham.

There%26#39;s a Hampton Inn not too far from the airport in Trussville. From the airport, take I-59 N, then take I-459 S. On I-459, take the first exit (Hwy 11), go right at the bottom of the ramp. At the first light, turn left. The Hampton Inn will be on your right. It%26#39;s about ten miles, but it%26#39;ll be worth it not to stay near the airport.

Still, it%26#39;s March 08, and I second the comments here. I recommend the Embassy Suites on 280 with free airport shuttle.

Brazil, the Embassy Suites is the complete opposite direction from what they said they were traveling. Granted, this was from last year, but we don%26#39;t want to mislead anyone searching for a place to stay and reading old posts.

  • Best Place to Stay

We are going to the Gulf Shores for Spring Break. It looks like there are a bunch of options available. Which is better : Gulf Shores, Fort Mrgan, ect... We have looked at Kiva Dunes or House rental on the beach

    thanks

    Best Place to Stay

Ask three people which is better and you%26#39;ll get three answers. Depends on what you%26#39;re looking for. Orange Beach has the most people on the beach. Gulf Shores is not quite as crowded. Fort Morgan is very quiet and uncrowded. GS and OB have the most things to do and that is where most of the restaurants are. Kiva is about a 15 minute drive from GS. Do a couple of searches on this board for attractions and restaurants and that will help you make a decision. Good luck!

    Best Place to Stay

We stayed at The Beach Club which is in Fort Morgan. It%26#39;s a resort that fits the needs of all ages. Every condo has a Gulf view. There are also cottage rentals, although they I don%26#39;t know why they call them cottages because they are more upscale. Anyhow, there%26#39;s tennis, beach, kids programs, restaurant, market and beautiful grounds. Only a 15 min. drive to the restaurants and hoopla and touristy sections of Gulf Shores. I%26#39;ve never seen Orange Beach, so I can%26#39;t comment.

We like to be right in Gulf Shores but we have a 14 and 12 year old. Although it%26#39;s pretty quiet compared to other places during Spring Break, there is more to do and more people than the other beaches.

Mom and Dad's GS trip report

    Background-

%26gt; I now live in Gulf Shores, AL and it was my 40th

    %26gt; Birthday.

%26gt; My parents are in their 70%26#39;s and aren%26#39;t as mobile as

    %26gt; they once were.

%26gt; The goal was to eat some good meals, show them the

%26gt; area, and get some rest.

    %26gt; Mission accomplished!

    %26gt;

    %26gt; Thurs (2/21)-

%26gt; Flew into Pensacola from Chicago.

%26gt; Temp when they left was 7 degrees.

%26gt; When they landed in Pensacola, 50s and rainy.

    %26gt; Drove to GS.

    %26gt; Stopped at Lambert%26#39;s (www.throwedrolls.com) for

    %26gt; lunch.

%26gt; Dad is a HUGE Cracker Barrel fan so I knew he%26#39;d love

    %26gt; this place.

%26gt; Food was plentiful as always and Mom about had a

    %26gt; heart

%26gt; attack when the waiter came to fill my tea glass and

%26gt; it was a fake pitcher. Looked like it spilled on me

%26gt; but there was no tea in the pitcher. She screamed.

%26gt; Got them checked into their hotel.

    %26gt;

    (marriott.com/hotels/…)

%26gt; Picked them up a few hours later and went to Lulu%26#39;s.

    %26gt; (http://www.lulusathomeport.com/main/index.php)

%26gt; This is normally a place locals don%26#39;t go to but they

%26gt; have an iceberg wedge salad with blue cheese and

    %26gt; bacon

%26gt; I knew my parents would love.

%26gt; Only downside is I asked for a table far away from

    %26gt; the

%26gt; band and was seated near them.

    %26gt;

    %26gt; Fri (2/22)-

%26gt; We went to the Tanger outlet mall.

%26gt; I bought some house shorts and a t-shirt from the

    %26gt; Reebox store.

%26gt; Mom got a new blouse at Lane Bryant.

%26gt; Continued to Fairhope and the Pointe Clear resort.

    %26gt;

    (marriott.com/hotels/…)

%26gt; Dad had been here in the 40%26#39;s with his parents and

    %26gt; had

    %26gt; fond memories.

    %26gt; BEAUTIFUL place.

%26gt; Old timey, classic place on Mobile Bay.

%26gt; Drove back to GS and drove them through the State

    %26gt; Park.

    %26gt; (www.alapark.com/parks/park.cfm?parkid=22)

%26gt; Showed them the cabins which I love and hopefully we

%26gt; can have a family gathering at.

    %26gt; Dinner was at Cosmos.

    %26gt;

    (gulf-shores-alabama-condo-rentals.com/cosmos…)

%26gt; Many people had recommended this place to me so I

    %26gt; thought we%26#39;d try it.

%26gt; Food was good but I thought a bit pricey.

    %26gt;

    %26gt; Sat (2/23)-

%26gt; My parents had never seen my apartment nor my cat

%26gt; (Fred) so I picked them up and brought them back.

%26gt; Mom helped me with picking out where to hang my

%26gt; artwork and Dad tried to bond with Fred.

    %26gt;

    (…photobucket.com/albums/…)

%26gt; He%26#39;s usually an outgoing cat but for some reason

%26gt; decided to retreat to the bed and ignore Mom and

    %26gt; Dad.

%26gt; Next I drove Mom and Dad the full length of the

    %26gt; beach

%26gt; from West Beach to the Flora-Bama.

    %26gt; They LOVED it!

%26gt; On the way back we stopped at the Perdido Beach

    %26gt; Resort

%26gt; for a fabulous meal of stuffed Crab Salad and

    %26gt; Tomato.

%26gt; (on the menu it says Avocado but they were out)

    %26gt;

    (perdidobeachresort.com/dining/cafe_lunch.asp)

%26gt; That night I had tickets to Celtic Woman in

    %26gt; Pensacola

%26gt; for my Birthday so I dropped Mom and Dad off at the

    %26gt; hotel.

    %26gt; (http://www.celticwoman.com/)

%26gt; They saw the movie Vantage Point and ordered pizza.

    %26gt;

    %26gt; Sun (2/24)-

    %26gt; Biloxi Day

%26gt; We went to the Beau Rivage Casino.

    %26gt; (www.BeauRivageResort.com )

%26gt; Had the buffet which was great.

%26gt; Mom played slots and won $8.50.

    %26gt; I lost $10 on video poker.

%26gt; Dad was the big winner at blackjack winning $45.

    %26gt;

    %26gt; Mon (2/25)-

    %26gt; My 40th birthday.

%26gt; Had a fantastic lunch at the Original Oyster House.

    %26gt; (http://www.originaloysterhouse.com/)

%26gt; Shopped for souvenirs at Souvenir City.

%26gt; Had a sunset dinner at Sea n Suds.

    %26gt; (http://www.sea-n-suds.com/)

    %26gt;

    %26gt; Tues (2/26)-

%26gt; Had lunch at Hazel%26#39;s in GS

%26gt; Visited the Naval Museum in Pensacola.

    %26gt; (http://www.navalaviationmuseum.org/)

%26gt; Dropped Mom and Dad at the airport.

    %26gt;

%26gt; All in all it was a great visit.

%26gt; In April we head to Chicago for their 50th wedding

    %26gt; anniversary!

%26gt; Anyone who is looking for a relaxed, family oriented

%26gt; beach vacation must come and check us out!

Mom and Dad's GS trip report

Sounds like a nice trip! Thanks for the report.

Mom and Dad's GS trip report

What a great time you showed your parents! You certainly picked the right spots.

What a lovely time it seems you gave your parents!

    Hey bamanascar,

What a great, detailed trip report! It looks like your parents enjoyed themselves. Thanks for all the up to date restaurant info!

    Question about the Ferry

Taking the family to Dauphin Island the week of March 17th, and trying to sort of scout out things to do (aside from just hang out near the ocean). I have a question on the ferry to Ft Morgan. It looks like it%26#39;ll cost about $40 to take the car over and back on the Ferry, but only $10 for the round trip on foot. Is there anything to see and do where the fairy stops in Ft. Morgan if we%26#39;re on foot, or will we need the car to get anywhere.

Secondly, any good places on the Island to go and watch NCAA tourney games?

    Thanks,

    Mike

    Question about the Ferry

    Mike,

Definitely take your car! Then you can drive down Fort Morgan Rd. into Gulf Shores or beyond. The fort and museum are good to explore for less than 1/2 a day, unless you%26#39;re a huge history buff. Maybe you could take your family to Gulf Shores for lunch.

Make sure you%26#39;re back in time for the ferry back to DI, or you%26#39;ll have a LONG drive around the bay!

    Question about the Ferry

You will need your car because once you leave the ferry you can drive about 20 minutes and be in Gulf Shores, it is very commercialized and all kinds of things to do. When you get off the ferry you are at a big parking lot so you will need your vehicle. It was very nice to go visit Gulf Shores for the day and then go back to the peaceful Dauphin Island at night. We will be going back for our 3rd year this year. Barnacle Bill%26#39;s seemed like had the big tv%26#39;s in it%26#39;s restaurant. Someone else might be able to give you a little more info on watching the games. Enjoy your trip to Dauphin Island. If you go to gulfshores.com you can see alot of things to do during your day trip to Ft. Morgan side. Just make sure you%26#39;re back in time to catch the ferry back to the island or you will have about a 2 hour drive trying to get back. Enjoy!

  • Where can I buy Mylar Blankets
  • hotels?

We are leaving on a carnival cruise from Mobile, March 24. We need a hotel for two nights for 8 people. Are there any near the water? I have read some really bad reviews about the hotels there. Any good ones?

    hotels?

The Renaissance Riverview is a nice hotel. Also, the Radisson is nice and I think they have a good parking deal for people on cruises.

Take every review you read with a healthy grain of salt, especially the negative ones. Some are written by competitors and some are written by people who are impossible to please. And some are valid.

    hotels?

thanks, I did not realize that competitors took the time to post here. wow.

The Radisson Admiral Semmes is a historic hotel very close to the cruise terminal. I believe they offer a cruise package deal for overnighters. The Battle House Hotel is also semi-historic (the site is, parts of the hotel are original) and is also in the same area. There is a Hilton Hotel in downtown Mobile. The Malaga Inn is also close to the area, more like an upscale motor lodge.

Battle House has gotten some good reviews. Not sure what used to be there, but as of now there is no Hilton in Mobile.

Holiday Inn has a nice one downtown in the old Sheraton. Its the round one with the rotating lounge on top. We stayed there during Bayfest and it would be a decent place to stay. Its not far from the cruise terminal parking garage or for a taxi.

    ichotelsgroup.com/h/…

The Battle House is so beautiful. Renaissance has been using its stunning glass-domed lobby for some of their ads nationally. It doesn%26#39;t say that%26#39;s the lobby but I know that dome 100%!

The present hotel dates from the 1900-1910%26#39;s when it was rebuilt from a devastating fire. During the 1800%26#39;s, many plantation owners stayed there while doing business in Mobile%26#39;s port. If you have the money, stay here. But that doesn%26#39;t mean money = service here in Mobile, unfortunately.

The Holiday Inn Downtown is a GREAT option. A lot nicer than your average Holiday Inn. Actually, like a Hilton. We went to visit friends staying there during Mardi Gras festivities last weekend. It%26#39;s pretty good. We had some friends stay there during the GMAC bowl, and they were pleasantly surprised.

If you stayed there, you could still walk next door to eat breakfast at the Admiral Semmes next door.

Leaving in the morning-Memphis to Orlando last minute Q!!!!

    Hello, all!

Just wanted to double check with you Birmingham experts on our Memphis TO Orlando driving plan.

    My questions are:

    1. Ya%26#39;ll gave me what looks to be good advice for RETURN leg: driving from Orlando-Tallahassee to Dothan-stop for the night route...continuing on to Montgomery-Birmingham-Memphis. Ok, so...should we take the same route TO Orlando?

    MapQuest keeps giving me:

Memphis-Birmingham-Auburn-Columbus_Albany-Valdosta-Orlando (hope that makes sense). This route does not go near Dothan. Hoping you real world drivers who have done the Birmngham to Orlando drive can advise on which is best for traffic, construction, etc.

We are leaving on a Friday afternoon (trying to avoid incoming snow/ice). It will take us 12-13 hours...we are driving straight with 2 drivers and have guaranteed hotel room waiting for us Saturday morning in Orlando.

Thanks SO much for your help:)

Leaving in the morning-Memphis to Orlando last minute Q!!!!

I know when my friends drove- they went thru Atlanta and down - and met some folks from Bham at Disney and they told them to come home a different way which was the way mapquest is saying via 280 which is through Auburn- they said it was easy- i might go that way- you could stay in columbus- I think Columbus is 3 or 4 hours from here-

Leaving in the morning-Memphis to Orlando last minute Q!!!!

    friend in Memphis,

I have not ever been through Auburn/Columbus way, but HAVE been the other two ways.

I definitely prefer the way through Dothan (US 231 to I-10, to I-75, etc.). I have found that when a route is similar enough in time %26amp; mileage to one that goes through ATL, it is ALWAYS better to avoid ATL. especially on a Friday!

Just prepare yourself that when going through Dothan, it appears to take forever to get through that town, as even the bypass is loaded with red lights, but it does come out better.

I also try www.randmcnally.com to compare %26amp; double check route reccommendations. I think Rand McNally has something you can look up CURRENT road construction conditions that may help you plan, not to mention give you those alternatives if you come upon a traffic jam.

    Are youtaking a GPS?

    HAVE FUN!

    Miller

bhlkin...thanks so much for your quick reply. It is our Spring Break and several families from our area are headed to Orlando...kept hearing people mention the other route and wanted to double check. We will stick with the Dothan direction. Really appreciate the tip on the webiste for current road conditions :) Thank you, again!

We have a surburban with onstar navigation screen...love the fun tools and space for all the kids/carpooling/sports...HATE filling that baby up with gas :)

    thanks, again for your help

    Golf for Kids

Can anyone recommend a 3-par golf couse that would be ok for kids. Going down March 29th for a week. I don%26#39;t need an expensive PGA course where people will be rolling there eyes etc.. when my kids (who are not Golf pros) shank one. Kids are 11 and 9. thanks for any help.

    Golf for Kids

There is a par 64 course at the intersection of Hwy 59 and County Road 12. Don%26#39;t know the name, but you can%26#39;t miss it.

    Golf for Kids

The above mentioned course is a good recommendation. They have a driving range as well.

    Other places:

Orange Beach Sports complex (Canal rd near the Wharf) is supposed to have a par 3 course but when I went there for the car show, I couldn%26#39;t find it. (didn%26#39;t look too hard though)

Also, Emerald Greens on CR 6 is a 9 holer I%26#39;m hearing good things about....

The RTJ golf course in Mobile supposedly has the best par 3 course in the state but is a bit of a drive and may be pricey (PGA-ish in other words)

Hope this helps and hit em straight!

I had forgotten that the executive course (par 3) at Orange Beach Sports Complex had reopened. It is actually across Canal Road and about a half mile east of the sports complex. It%26#39;s right behind Coco Cay furniture. Nice little course with a good driving range.

Thanks dd992emo. I will have to check it out for future recommendations. Sounds like the location for GS or OB guests would be perfect....

Definitely go to the Orange Beach Golf Academy. We always go there with our kids and it%26#39;s close. It%26#39;s fairly priced and a nicely landscaped par 3 course. And we%26#39;ve never run into crowds. I%26#39;m glad to hear they%26#39;ve reopened.

I researched this a little more and here%26#39;s more info:

    Par 3s/ Driving Range/ 9 holes/ Executive Course

    a) Gulf Links Golf Club (http://www.gulflinksgolfcourse.com/) Have not played here but drivin by it numerous times. Nooone on the course at any time. No trees, windswept.

    b) Magnolia Springs-Short Course (http://www.magnoliaspringsgolf.com/) Have not played here nor seen.

    c) Orange Beach Golf Center (obparksandrec.com/sportsplexgolfcenter/golfc…) Plan to go here soon. Will report.

    d) RTJ in Mobile (Magnolia Grove)- (http://www.rtjgolf.com/trail/greenfees.htm) Have not played here nor seen.

    e) Emerald Greens (www.emeraldgreensal.com/pages/golfcourse.html) Plan to go here soon. Will report.

  • Coming to Mobile for Basketball Tourney

    Hi......

Will be coming to Mobile on Sunday March 9 to attend the Sunbelt Conference Basketball Tourney. Was wondering about hotels ';near'; University of South Florida. And also.......best seafood restaurants near there too.

    Thanks so much!

Coming to Mobile for Basketball Tourney

I would recommend either the Homewood Suites or Hampton Inn in the Providence Park area off Airport Blvd. The hotels are located a stones throw from each other and either one would be fine. It%26#39;s a short drive to the Mitchell Center from there, which is where the tournament will be I assume. The Mitchell Center is a nice venue.

There is also a Bonefish Grill right there by hte hotels which has good seafood, but for something with more local flavor you would probably want to try either Oysterellas or Felix%26#39;s on the Mobile Bay Causeway, or for more casual fare The Original Oyster House or Ed%26#39;s Seafood shack, also on the causeway. To get onto the causeway be in the right lane as you come out of the I-10 tunnel in downtown Mobile heading eastbound and exit immediately.

And one more thing...it%26#39;s the University of South ALABAMA, not South Florida.

Coming to Mobile for Basketball Tourney

    Yeah...lol, I meant South Alabama!!

    Thanks for your advice!

There is a Wintzell%26#39;s also somewhat across the street from Bonefish Grill. But for the REAL Wintzell%26#39;s, I agree, go downtown!

Restaurants w/ good views/atmosphere? Calypsos? Tacky Jacks?

Which restaurant is best for view/atmosphere (and of course good food)?

Below are the one%26#39;s I%26#39;ve been hearing about, not necessarily in any order. I am looking for feedback. I am taking my picky in-laws in July and I want to make the best choices. It will include my wife, 1-1/2 year old son, father/mother-in-law, and 2 sets of brother/sister-in-laws.

#1 Tacky Jack%26#39;s --- which one? I%26#39;ve heard there are two locations, one in orange beach and one in fort morgan. Does anyone have a preference as to which one has a better atmosphere or view.

    #2 Calypso Joe%26#39;s

    #3 LuLus.

    #4 ????

Any recommendations on which one%26#39;s to pick from the above list???We%26#39;ll be staying at the Beach Club, so I know that the Restaurant has a nice beach view.

Restaurants w/ good views/atmosphere? Calypsos? Tacky Jacks?

I like tacky jacks in orange beach, It is on the bay water, You can just pull right up in your boat...

It is very rustic... It sits on a doc......

I love Lu lu%26#39;s , but they can be very loud, with the band playing, Long waits if you pick the usual times to eat... I love going there,,

    Calypso joes, has wonderful food.........

And out of the thre would be the better choice ,

Restaurants w/ good views/atmosphere? Calypsos? Tacky Jacks?

To the previous poster: I%26#39;m sorry, I did not understand your last sentence. Did you mean that Calypso Joe%26#39;s would be the best choice out of the 3?? Thanks.

We really like Lulu%26#39;s, but expect a really long wait. We have gotten there around 5 and 5:30 before and they were so crowded, they weren%26#39;t even taking names for 3 hours. It can get insane during the Summer. It%26#39;s a fun place and good food, but not worth that kinda wait, especially w/ a 1 1/2 year old! Try going there for lunch, or get there for a really early dinner.

Calypso Joe%26#39;s is a great atmosphere too and good food. Just as good as Lulu%26#39;s in my opinion, but not quite as popular.

Never been to Tacky Jack%26#39;s, but we might try it out this time.

    Have a nice trip!

Since view/atmosphere seem important to you, just want you to know that LuLu%26#39;s is not an enclosed restaurant.... it%26#39;s open air, but comfortable. Not sure how your picky in-laws will feel about that. I personally don%26#39;t like the food, but some on this board do.

And Calypso%26#39;s is our fav restaurant in GS, but the view is nothing great. There is a marina adjacent, but the water is black. So if you like to look at boats, it%26#39;s great. If you like to look at water, you may lose your appetite. That being said, you can%26#39;t really see the marina once seated-- unless you eat outside.

Both places%26#39; atmosphere is very ';beachy';-- sort of rustic/casual.

I guess I%26#39;m unclear on what you mean by ';picky';. I know I classify some of my acquaintances as picky and I wouldn%26#39;t take them to any of the places you mentioned. Tacky Jack%26#39;s has good burgers and beer. The OB location is on the water in Cotton Bayou and has a good view of Perdido Pass and lots of boats going by. Calypso Joe%26#39;s has no view to speak of and I%26#39;ve always thought the food was so-so, but that%26#39;s subjective opinion. Lulu%26#39;s is kind of nuts in the summer. Okay place for lunch, but at night the wait can easily be three hours. Food is okay. There is a lot for kids to do there, though. Bahama Bob%26#39;s is a nice place on the beach with a good variety on their menu.

For higher end dining there is Louisiana Lagniappe at San Roc Cay and Zeke%26#39;s at the Marina. Both have nice marina views. Original Oyster House has some decent views of the bayou leading into Little Lagoon and the food is pretty good. Once again, there can be a wait for over an hour. For non-view places there are Cosmo%26#39;s, Ginny Lane%26#39;s at The Wharf and Villagio at The Wharf.

Original Oyster House would get my vote as well. Tell them you%26#39;d like a lagoon view.

Also check out lunch at Perdido Beach

    Resort

Actually, the restaurant at The Beach Club was wonderful last year. You want to avoid Original Oyster House because it will be VERY crowded and the food isn%26#39;t as good as it used to be. LuLus did not impress me as far as the food, and there%26#39;s no view of the beach. However, if they want a spring break party atmosphere, that%26#39;s the place to go.

For the best view, atmosphere, and food, stay put and eat at the Restaurant at the Beach Club!!!

Listen to bamanascar and the other person from Gulf Shores. (I believe 992emo?) I learned a long time ago to listen to locals when a restaurant is reccomended. Also, my husband and I have visited Gulf Shores usually once a year for the last several years except for last year, and have found for ourselves that the restaurants they have mentioned are the best. Go and enjoy!

*Bahama Bob%26#39;s is very pleasant, very casual, and very beachy. Definitely go and go early. The parking lot and restaurant are small. The food is good. *Zeke%26#39;s has a nice bay view and they do things like put sprigs of mint in the iced tea. The food is good, it%26#39;s pricey and should impress your in-laws nicely. *LuLu%26#39;s is LOUD and way too busy for your little one. *The atmosphere at the Gulf Shores Steamer isn%26#39;t much to brag about but the non-fried seafood is good. *The Original Oyster House is very family/ kid friendly and has nice views. The wait is very long for a table at dinner - even if you think that you are arriving early. Go for lunch. *Also - keep in mind - when you request a table for 9 people, you will not get to be very picky about where you sit in lots of restaurants.

We went to LuLus last summer when my son was almost 2 and he loved it more than any other resturant in GS/OB area..The chaos keeps the kids occupied while the adults get to enjoy their meal..

  • Trip Report March 1-8

I just returned from GS so this may not be very detailed since I am tired! Here goes...

We arrived on March 1 at about 6pm. We live in Middle TN and it took about 9 hrs. to get there. We rented a condo at The Enclave from the owner on vrbo.com. Our group consisted of me (37 yr old F), DH, DS (12 yrs old.), my mom, brother and sis in law. We had a 3 bedr./3 bath. The condo was very nice and very spacious. The balcony was a corner wrap-around and had a great view both ways of the beach.

Weather - very nice. It was in the 60s - 70 every day. It did not rain during any of the days. (rained 1 night) The beach was absolutely beautiful. Very clean. The outdoor pool was too cold, but we did use the indoor pool.

Food - We ate out every day. Here are my reviews of restaurants:

Lulu%26#39;s - We ate here 3 times. Needless to say, we loved it! We did not have to wait at all. I think it was due to the time of year. My favorite was the Mahi Tacos. I also loved the salsa and fried green tomatoes.

Doc%26#39;s Seafood Shack - This was our absolute favorite! The fried shrimp was the best we have ever had. The gumbo was also yummy.

Lambert%26#39;s - It was a fun place, but we did not like the food too much. I know that a lot of people love it but it was just not our type of food. It tasted ';canned.'; The waiters are very nice though.

Hope%26#39;s Cheesecake - We stopped here one afternoon after reading about it on the internet. This is the best cheesecake I have ever had. I bought a 6 pack of the cheesecake ';cupcakes'; so that I could sample 6 kinds. My favorite was snickerdoodle. They also have the best key lime pie.

One day we drove to Biloxi to go to the casinos. It is a very long drive! We did not win any money, but we had fun. We ate the buffet at Beau Rivage and it was very good.

Activities- The men mostly golfed, and I can%26#39;t report on that since they didn%26#39;t tell me details. The women shopped. The Tanger Outlet mall was not too great. It had been damaged and a lot of it was being repaired. We really enjoyed going to the Wharf to the little shops there. I got some really good jewelry deals. We also found a ';back room'; at Sand Dollar Lifestyles with 75% off shoes. I got leather Tevas for 40 dollars. (reg. $100)

That is all I can think of right now. If you have any questions let me know.

    Trip Report March 1-8

Glad you had a good time. The Enclave is a nice property. I%26#39;m not a fan of Lambert%26#39;s (motto: If it ain%26#39;t fried, it ain%26#39;t food), either. Hope%26#39;s is indeed good, if a little pricey. The Wharf is doing some pretty good business these days.

    Trip Report March 1-8

    Thanks for the review...

We will be there in JUne..

I can%26#39;t place docs, where is it??

I think the wharf should be easier to find,

I think alot of tourist might not find it,

But it is a nice thing to do when you are over baked for the day...And need a break from the sun and sand.

Docs in OB or GS?? I have not tried the one in OB but the Docs in GS was absolutely rancid. It was the worst experience dining that I have ever had in going to the island for 10 years. Food took forever to get to the table and it was cold. Our server was horrible also. I hear the one in OB is much better though.

Doc%26#39;s in OB is at the corner of Canal Road and Hwy 161 (OB Blvd). Doc%26#39;s in GS is on Hwy 59 about a half mile north of the beach in Sawgrass Ctr. Don%26#39;t go there any more, but I%26#39;ve heard from other locals that neither location is as good as the original was when it was the only one.

    Questions re The Wharf

I had a few questions about The Wharf in Gulf Shores.

    - Does anyone know about how much the ferris wheel ride is? How many people can fit in a ';bucket';? We have a 4 year old - we thought she might like the ride...any even been on it?

    - Any good restaurants there?

    - I saw they have a little water park area called The Oasis. Can you pay to get in or is it for members only?

Thanks for the info. The Wharf wasn%26#39;t open last time we were in GS, so we%26#39;re looking forward to checking it out.

    Questions re The Wharf

    Here is their website:

    http://www.thewharfal.com/

I think the ferris wheel seats 4 in a car, face to face. If I%26#39;m wrong someone will tell us. Ginny Lane%26#39;s is my favorite restaurant there, but I also like Rafter%26#39;s. The Italian place whose name I can%26#39;t remember is pretty good, but kinda pricey for a shopping center in Lower Alabama. Good food, though, and a really good bakery attached to it.

I didn%26#39;t even know the Oasis was open, so haven%26#39;t seen it. The pictures on the website look interesting.

    Questions re The Wharf

My husband and I went to a sports bar at the Wharf last August. I think it was called Rafters. It was fine. Typical sports bar food and drinks. Didn%26#39;t go to any other restaurants there besides that.

We visited The Wharf last May during our visit to OB/GS and was not very impressed for all the hype. We plan on going back again this year w/ hopes of improvements.

There is a johnny rockets right next to the ferris wheel.......

50%26#39;s style diner with good burgers, shakes, ect...

The service was poor, But I think it was because they were new, and they were short handed.......

    tripadvisor.com/…16853364

For pictures of johnny rockets and the ferris wheel....

It is kinda hard to find.........

we thought it was near the beach, but it isn%26#39;t....

You have to take the foley beach express road from orange beach to find it.......

I%26#39;ve been to that Johnny Rocket%26#39;s twice and left both times without being seated. Once right after they opened and again about three months ago. Both times half the tables were empty, but was told there would be a few minute wait because of not enough wait staff. I quit trying. Rafter%26#39;s has good burgers and bbq sandwiches. And Guiness!

Ok have not been to the one in OB but by this and every other review on here, no one should go to this Johnny Rockets.

I did have a follow up question about the water park, the Oasis. Is it just for quests and or can you pay to get in for the day?

    ';I did have a follow up question about the water park, the Oasis. Is it just for guests and or can you pay to get in for the day?';

I%26#39;m glad you asked as this is one of my pet peeves about the Wharf.

The sign says it%26#39;s for guests of the hotel but EVERY time I drive by there it%26#39;s a ghost town. From outside the fences it looks magnificent as they have hammocks dangling from palm trees, a lazy river, etc. Why they don%26#39;t open it up to outsiders is beyond me. Maybe they don%26#39;t want us riff-raff....Anyway, if anyone from the Wharf is reading this, please explain why this place is so dead when it%26#39;s so beautiful and why don%26#39;t you open it up to non-guests?

I have frequently recommended Rafter%26#39;s at The Wharf on this board. Went there yesterday and, for the third time in a row, the service was deplorable. The place wasn%26#39;t half full and we sat in a booth for almost ten minutes before I walked over to the bar and got us something to drink and asked about a server. Bartender seemed mystified that we would want to order something, but Slacker Boy soon showed up and took our order. After that all went pretty well. I like the place and their food, but don%26#39;t expect top notch service if you go there.

    I think it%26#39;s around $4.00

We just returned from OB and went to the Wharf several times. I never saw a water park. We ate lunch at ginny lane%26#39;s and it was very good. They had lunch specials for $8. I had chicken salad croissant and shrimp bisque soup. There are still quite a few empty shops, but the ones that are there are good. They are more ';boutiquey'; but I found good prices. The merchants were very friendly.
