Grocery shopping before the ferry for Ft.Morgan?

I read on another post that there is a Walmart Supercenter somewhere after you take the Dauphin Island exit. Can anyone give me a bit more information regarding where this is and how to get to it?

We%26#39;ll be coming to GS from Arkansas and will likely use the ferry to get to Ft. Morgan since we%26#39;re staying out there. I%26#39;d love to stop and pick up a few groceries before we get on the ferry (and save ourselves a trip the GS Walmart our first night in town). We don%26#39;t have to check in with any realty company, so we%26#39;ll go straight to our house from the ferry. Do you think getting to this Walmart and then over to the ferry would work out ok? Thanks!

I%26#39;m pretty sure there is a big Wal Mart on Rangeline Road in Mobile. That should be on the way to the ferry. Check the WM website for an address and directions.

Thanks for the tip. I looked for locations on Walmart%26#39;s website and was slightly confused. There are a lot of Walmarts in that area! I will get my husband on this task, however. He loves to ';find'; things and use his GPS as well. Hopefully, we%26#39;ll figure out a good supercenter to run into for a few groceries before we get on the ferry. Thanks again!

Just wondering if you found the Wal-Mart? My family is in the same position you are. Also, how did the ferry ride work out? Did you have to wait a long time before you could get on?

okcbs, We don%26#39;t go to GS until the middle of July, so I%26#39;ll try to report back after that. My husband has looked it up on Google Earth and found that there are several Walmarts in the area--we just need to figure out which is the closet. We%26#39;ll do that closer to the trip.

For the ferry, I can tell you a little about it now. We used it last year when we were leaving Ft. Morgan. We had the departure/arrival times from the ferry%26#39;s website and got there a bit early b/c there are only so many slots on the ferry, and we weren%26#39;t sure how many others would be going--we were there about 30 minutes before it was supposed to depart. We weren%26#39;t the first ones there and we weren%26#39;t the last either. The ferry ride was really nice--you can get out of your cars and walk around. You also pay once you are actually on the ferry and they do take credit cards. It takes about 30 mintues to get over to Dauphin Island. The only tricky part--for us--was that we missed the turn to get to the bridge that leaves Dauphin Island so we had to turn around and back track a bit.

At the beginning of the trip to GS, we attempted to take the ferry over to Ft. Morgan but had terrible luck with that. We knew the times the ferry would be leaving DI and were doing quite well with our time as far as getting there to catch it. After we had driven onto the DI bridge, we found a sign that said the ferry was closed (maintenace issues), so we had to turn around and drive back to Mobile. We were furious b/c of how long it takes just to drive to the DI bridge and felt that there really should have been signs placed in more places along the road--well before you ever get to the bridge. Oh well...we made sure to get the phone number for the ferry but discovered that week that someone isn%26#39;t always available to answer their phone--so it might not have helped anyway. Incidentally, in Gulf Shores, we noticed the ';ferry closed'; signs near where Highway 59 meets up with Ft. Morgan road (Highway 180, I think).

So, we liked the ferry but just had a bad experience in the beginning. We%26#39;re planning to try again this year and will even call first to make sure it%26#39;s working. Let%26#39;s hope someone will answer their phone! It will save us some time b/c our rental house is on Ft. Morgan and we%26#39;ll already have the key when we arrive. It should shave off a bit of time for us where we would otherwise be stuck in all that GS%26#39;s traffic trying to get into town.

Sorry this was so long! I will do my best to get back to you about Walmart.

Hello again Lee4, I see you are returning to this area again, welcome back. There is a wally world very close to where you turn off I-10. When you get to the turn-off headed toward the island, on I-10, instead of heading south on the road toward the island, HEAD NORTH... it is across the interstate on the other side of the road, can%26#39;t miss it. If I can be of any other help, just let me know, again, jim.

Hi Jim--it%26#39;s nice to hear from you! You were such a great help to me on these forums last year when we were planning our trip to Ft. Morgan. Thanks again!

Thank you for these directions to a Walmart close to DI. My goal is to pick up a few supplies to make it through our first day or two at the beach house before we go the GS%26#39; Walmart. It%26#39;s always so crowded on weekends! We discovered last year that we bought way too many groceries our first night in town and overloaded our refrigerator. It took quite a while to cool it down, so we%26#39;re hoping to avoid that this year. We also ended up buying a lot of local seafood and didn%26#39;t need all the other food we%26#39;d gotten. Live and learn, right? Thank you again!
