would appreciate any tips on the area, possible places to stop between Mobile and the island, groceries, farmers markets, etc. also any day trips, will have kids along and an alligator farm or something similar sounds like fun, saw a place near mobile that does airboats wonder if anyone has any info on that.
Dauphin Island 1st timerHi, Brent:
You can do an airboat ride behind the Blue Gill restaurant on the Mobile Causeway. Other attractions on the Causeway include the USS Alabama, whioh is a WWII battleship restored as a floating museum. THere is also a submarine, airplanes, etc there. Kids and adults will enjoy the airboat ride and the Battleship- guaranteed.
There is a link to the airboat ride on the Blue Gill%26#39;s site:

As for groceries, your best bet is to stop at the Super Walmart as you exit I-10 for Dauphin Island.
There are two exits for the ';Dauphin Island Parkway';. You want the westernmost one, the one just west of I-65. The exit splits off- north to Tillman%26#39;s Corner and south to Dauphin Island. Go north to Tillman%26#39;s corners to go to the Walmart, then retrace your path south to head down to the Island (passing over I-10 and continuing south).
There%26#39;s is also a smaller grocery called ';Greer%26#39;s Food Tiger about halfway between I-10 and Dauphin Island, at a little crossroads called ';Bayley%26#39;s Corner'; . . . and a general store on the Island called the ';Ship %26#39;n Shore'; but they are best relied upon for when you run out of something, not ';stocking up';.
Da Island Mon
Dauphin Island 1st timerThe island is about 30 minutes south of Mobile. There is a super walmart in Mobile as you start down 193 to Dauphin Island. Do your major shopping there. There is a store on the island called the Ship-n-Shore that everyone needs to visit at least once. You can buy just about anything there from groceries to fishing supplies to souveniors. As far as things to do, on the island is the Sea Lab, Ft. Gaines and the fishing pier. If you drive back in to Mobile, you have the USS Alabama battle park that is so neat. You get to go inside the submarine and the battleship and see fighter planes. My grandson really loved the ship. He said he wanted to buy it when he gets all grown up! Hope you enjoy it. We are going back in 18 days for our 3rd time and we can%26#39;t wait.
thank you both for the responses, Blue Gill looks like a great place, will have to try it if the kids get a little restless. will have to try Greers and the Ship n Store, kind of try to avoid wallymart at all costs. if you know of any other ';locally'; owned full size groceries around Mobile that would be great as well.
the island looks beautiful, nice R%26amp;R kind of place, exactly the kind of vacation we%26#39;re looking for!
can%26#39;t stop looking at the weather reports for down there, won%26#39;t be there soon enough.
thanks again!
Also , you can take the ferry across to fort morgan and gulf shores to eat and shop and tour the area...
Be sure to wear sunscreen, There isn%26#39;t much shade on the ferry..........
