Short trip report

We didn%26#39;t get to the Bodies Exhibit. I%26#39;m kinda torn on this one. Maybe some day, maybe not. Anyway, we stayed at the Battle House. Had a great room on the 7th floor of the new section. We%26#39;ve stayed downtown Mobile before, and so know about the train at all hours. However, with the heat/air conditioning going, it blocks out quite a bit of the train noise, although you can still hear it. We got an early check in 10:30 a.m., put our things in the room and went to Wintzell%26#39;s for lunch. It was very good. We shared the seafood salad which had boiled shrimp and some of the West Indies crabmeat. Also, we shared a basket of fried crawfish tails, oysters and fried okra. Everything was fresh and very good. The downtown area was rather quiet on Saturday, but we enjoyed just walking around. Some of the trees in the park still had lots of beads left over from MG.

Short trip report

My husband and I are planning to take a short tour of the south this summer and were considering Alabama. We know nothing about any city there and were wondering what made you choose Mobile. If you dont%26#39; mind sharing, how long were you there and what were some other things that you did?

Short trip report

Well, Mobile is an amazing old Southern city, dates from 1702 (founded before New Orleans-1718). So you will find New Orleans-style food here, keeping in mind that actually it%26#39;s Mobile-style food they serve in NO. (; Before the Civil War, Mobile was the 3rd largest port in the US, so we%26#39;ve got a lot of history-type museums too.

There%26#39;s really a lot to do here. You can get info by going to www.mobilebay.org ; they%26#39;ll send you a free pamphlet. Start with a trip to Fort Conde, a reproduction of the 1720%26#39;s French fort once here. It%26#39;s free and the info. center. There is a free (called MODA) trolley that leaves from here for a 20 min. trip around the districts of downtown. To see more historic districts, Ft. Conde can set you up on a 1 hour bus tour for maybe $15. YOu can also pick up free brochures on self-guided walking and/ or driving tours of downtown and historic districts.

While Bienville Square is beautiful; all the action takes place as you walk further West on Dauphin Street(an easy walk) around Cathedral Square. Candy Shoppe is on this trek plus several bars/restaurants.

Check out the Catholic Cathedral (ca. 1840%26#39;s). Stunning church!

Favorite museums of mine: the FREE Ft. Conde, Museum of Mobile, the FREE Phoenix Fire Museum, Oakleigh Historic Complex with 3 different homes- 1830%26#39;s mansion,1850%26#39;s middle class, and 1855 slave house, and the Carnival Museum.

If you can swing it, stay at the Battle House. Summer rates will likely be reasonable.

I couldn%26#39;t agree more with Mobilemystic. We did stay at the Battle House Hotel. What a beautiful old hotel that%26#39;s been refurbished to its great splendor.
