This is more to the local residents of the island. My family and I come every year and we enjoy your island for a week. We always wonder what is happening when the hurricanes come in to the island. Our prayers are with you and your families to stay safe. Maybe if someone who lives there could sortof give an update after the storms come in to let us know how it is going down there. You are always in our thoughts and prayers. Stay safe during this hurricane season and God Bless.
Hurricanes and Dauphin Island
Good morning mhappystich,
I have read your post about staying on Dauphin Island. Thank you for expressing in these posts what we are and what we are not.
GUSTAV:
Gustav took out most of the berm. A berm that is a frustration to us as the Corp of Engineers dredging practices is the reason we have lost 1000 feet of natural dunes and beach front over the last 25 years and have to accept this bandaid instead of federal restoration from their incompetence.
Some far west end gulf front and 1st tier homes lost steps and some plumbing. Sand was washed over Bienville.
IKE:
Ike%26#39;s broad storm surge came in just as the road damage was being cleared from Gustav.
On the far West End (past Raphael Sims St) there were more steps damage, some power poles went down and more plumbing/water losses on the south (gulf side) of Bienville. Power remains off in this section.
From Raphael Sims east the West End beach is in good condition and the homes are available for rentals with all utilities open and no sand on the streets.
The rentals/resident homes in DeSoto Landing and Audubon Place had no damage as they are protected by Sand/Pelican Island from storm surge.
The gulf front Isle Dauphine Golf Course also had minimal damage and is playing well.
The campground is open and running.
The ferries should also be open and running to Ft Morgan.
Fishing has picked up, Light House Bakery is open, Skinner%26#39;s Seafood is open for fresh caught and some prepared foods.
Flamingo Fae%26#39;s at the golf course is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Most island businesses are open.
If you need some specifics just post your question or email me direct.
Hope you can visit SOON!
Hurricanes and Dauphin Island
Thank you so very much for the up-date. I always wonder and I love your webcam on your website of the beach. I log in almost daily to see what is happening. It was amazing to see the waves when Ike was rolling through the gulf toward Texas. So far away but it was such an impact on the island.
Please keep the updates coming and thanks again so much!
I just came back from driving the whole island. Bienville (the main East-West road) is open to all traffic (residents and visitors). All resident and rental homes are open from the East End to just past Rapheal Sims ST.
Most of the West End, Northside homes are available for rental. The only ones not ready for occupany are on the Southside of Bienville WEST of Rapheal Sims St due to required repairs to water/sewer lines.
If you have rental in this section please for the FALL call your rental agency immediately to check on ocupancy and have the best selection if you need a backup home.
Best of luck! Marion
My pleasure to offer the webcam. I enjoy the view as well and watching the waves before the short power outage was pretty wild.
I am also happy to know you care for the island as we do.
The whole Gulf Coast has been so beaten up over the last several years both by stornms and the lies of the press. After Ivan and Katrina they screamed all over the country we were destroyed and the bridge was gone. Of course we were hurt on the West End but the majority of the island was fine.
Enjoy your visit.
The very first time we came to Dauphin Island was the year that Katrina came in. We actually left the island early Saturday morning coming home the weekend before Katrina came in. The home we rented was on Veritas. It was called Dream Weaver. It wasn%26#39;t as luxurious as the ones we stay in now but to us it was a little bit of heaven for that week. We really hated to find out the so many of the homes on the island had been destroyed. One day maybe my husband and I can retire to the island. Wouldn%26#39;t that be awesome! I could never tire of the sounds of the ocean. First thing in the morning with a cup of coffee and watching the sun come up---what a beautiful sight! But, I work for a very well known family restaurant and being able to get away for one solid week is as awesome as can be right now. Being a cook for so long might not be as glam as some jobs but I can assure you it is fulfilling to know you made someone%26#39;s day a little bit better.
Please keep the updates coming for those of us who can not be there all the time. It is a pleasure to have a friend on ';the island';. And, I love the webcam! Thanks so very much!
Well, I certainly know the value of the cooks of the world. The family run restaurants, cafes, butcher shops and bakeries are what what make so many collections of homes a community. The love you put into each meal is the glue that holds people together.
I am part of another business that produces the Food Network series ';Good Eats'; so I have close relationships with many small and large food industry owners and see their daily struggles.
Thanks for all the hours you put in for your customers.
Hope you can join us a property owner on the island one day. There are some locations that are on the water which are much more protected from storms as a property owner. There is a very strong rental market as well if owning a rental helps ease the strain on buying.
Best of luck and come visit soon!
Thanks! Alot of times you wonder if what you do day to day makes a difference.
